I loved this - excellent storytelling and great tips for language learners.

I really dig your message at the very beginning, when encountering the Swiss woman, of not getting competitive with other students in the language class. I think it's natural to measure yourself against others in terms of the progress you're making, but the best classes have a supportive, collaborative environment.

Thanks for these suggestions! I am currently studying Mandarin in Taiwan and am finishing up my second month. These are very true, especially "make mistakes" and "don't limit learning to the classroom." I found myself holding back at first in fear of making myself look stupid by making a mistake, but eventually came to realize that I will never know what I have to work on unless I learn the hard way. Thanks again!
