Thank you for writing that! I also studied abroad in Mexico and I feel the need to tell people that Mexico is a wonderful place with amazing people despite what one may hear on the news! I am planning to teach English in Queretaro after I graduate in a few months and am so happy to see this post!

Succinct and eloquent insights on tensions that have really vexed me— not only in France, Scotland, Ireland, and Guatemala, but also in Anaconda, Deer Lodge, and Lee Vining. #1 calls to mind Rilke and the American Romanticists; #2 I dealt with, peripherally and sloppily, in my first essay for Phil's class, which I should send you even though it is sloppy; #3 should be glued to every door on the campuses of some schools we have in common; in #4, "slurping and dripping" is perfect; #5 made me want to go back to Guatemala really, really badly. But I might go to Mexico instead, because that's where you are.

I stumbled across this post and I too lived abroad in France. Number 1 and 5 really hit home for me. Especially when the country did break my heart. I'm now healed and can go back. This was very well written and I am so glad to have read it.
