The spirit of this post seems to align with some of my thinking on bringing more than your luggage to your next vacation destination, whether you do it for a month or a whole year - http://global-culture.org/coyoacan-chronicles/

I've often written about this mythical character I call the "global citizen" as a person that uses his travels to understand what pieces of each destination contribute to his project. He is also highly motivated to create connections between the various places he visits.

It seems to me that your recent experience has awaken your inner global citizen. Congrats!

Inspiring story - thanks! I wondered which Latin America county you were referring to until I saw Julie's comment and was like - oh - right.

Cool article. We were living in Colombia at the same time! I just got back to the US in July after 6 months there, most of it in Envigado/Medellin.

After my first week or two in Medellin, I decided to live there, and promptly began a new blog about my experience - http://MedellinLiving.com

It was an amazing feeling to wake up and be excited to work on writing new content and using the blog as a reason to discover the city. Part of the reason I started it was I saw there was no such blog by a westerner. I knew the forthcoming tourist rush would eventually put me in a good position to earn money from advertising....though I can't say I thought of this all as a business. :)
