Your tips makes me fell a little better. I want to try this experience as soon as possible. But i'm so afraid and i've several doubts. Work with kids is such a hard responsability. Live in another country is already difficult, but i wanna know how you did with study. Could you tell me some tips for this?

This article is really accurate, as I have been au pairing in The Netherlands for two months now I can totally agree with most of these tips, although I have found making friends here to be really easy, there are a lot of au pairs here as well as friendly dutch people. The most important thing is getting out there, no matter where you are in the world. Check facebook groups for "au pairs in Thailand" or "au pairs in... Antarctica" and something will come up, even if the closest person is a bit far it's nice to be able to relate to someone else living the au pair life. I totally recommend au pairing but learning what the job will be about is REALLY important before going. I didn't ask many questions and everything sounded really positive before getting here. Of course there are some aspects of the job I don't agree with, but the hardest part to deal with is how overwhelming everything seems at first. Not knowing how to work the washing machine/dishwasher, having no idea where most things are located in town, what stores sell what etc. But after a couple months of getting situated and making friends it feels just like home.

Hi Lana!
Can I ask you a personal question? How did you find an Au Pair job in the South of France without knowing French? I'd appreciate your help as I'm resaerching programs in the South of France but can't find one that doesn't require knowing the language.

thank you,
Reene

[...] For young ladies, the most popular means of full-emmersion is to become an au-pair. I can’t speak from personal experience, but I highly recommend it, as you would be living with a family who may not speak English. You would see the culture from the inside and be exposed to the language more than you could hope. It is also one of the most price-friendly options. There are plenty of resources online with some good tips for the asipiring au pair. [...]

Definitely agree with the making friends part... its soooo hard. I spent 3 months in the south of France and not being at a school or group tour or organization makes it really impossible to meet people somewhere you don't speak the language or know anyone!

Shannon, these are great suggestions! Instead of just linkig to them, could I have your permission to repost them w/ your photo for the moms at AuPairMom.com? We'd also love to hear any other advice you have from the au pair side of things....
