Great article - I always try and fit a cookery course in when I'm away as it's a good way to meet a few like minded people and get a great meal. It was more expensive than most, but my personal favourite was the Tum Tum Cheng school in Luang Prabang, Laos.

My husband, a private chef, used to offer Caribbean cooking classes to travelers when we lived in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, and it wasn't only a special experience for his clients; it was an equally wonderful experience for us. Though the classes were scheduled in four hour blocks, guests regularly stayed on for as long as 8 or even 10 hours. We'd talk about music, local politics and culture, we'd help them map out options for the rest of their trip, or show them other special places around the historic city center. We're still in touch with some people who came to our home for cooking class--and left as friends.
