Love this! I’ve been living in Sydney for about four months now and I feel as if I might’ve written this article myself! And I definitely identify with the bird enthusiast thing. Growing up my mom was obsessed with birds and seemed to know the name of every bird that every existed. I always thought it was the most boring hobby ever, but since I’ve been in Australia I’ve found that I can’t wait to get home and get online to figure out what the new bird I discovered today is.

Loved your story; I am an Australian from West Australia (Perth) and get to go to Sydney at least twice a year for a few weeks up near the Blue Mountains and I must say you have now summed up what I have tried to describe to my overseas friends when trying to explain why they should come over. Your article has made me appreciate what I have at my backdoor. You also gave me a laugh how you thought it was funny that we ask “How ya goin?” I never thought of it before but it is quite starnge

I really love your post. I was in Sydney a few months ago and totally loved it. The people, the activities, the sites, the cuisine all make it such a special place. I really would like to go back and live there!!

Great article! As a Montrealer living in Adelaide, I could especially relate to the cockatoo comment, they are incredibly loud and annoying! While magpies and ducks here behave like psychos. However, Australian birds are so colorful and exotic that we still like them…

As my Canadian friend who married and Australian and now lives in Sydney said upon her first day in Australia: “Look honey, exotic birds!” to which he replied: “Nah, we just call them birds here…”

P.s.: As for the iced coffee – order an iced latte or iced flat white instead. If they still don’t get it, ask for a latte on ice. It never fails.
