The tamarind water *is* difficult to stomach and it helps if the water's clean :) Dahi Phuchka is always a safer bet for a first-timer:)

I had these forced on me several times in Lahore, and I just couldn't stomach the tamarind water. Not sure what it was about it. I think the first time I had golgappe, I expected the water to be sweet, and when it was salty my taste buds revolted. Nobody told me to put the whole thing in my mouth at once, so I also made a huge mess and had the water running all over my face and hands and dripping on to my shirt....hopefully your tips will help other travelers avoid this mishap!

Oh Reeti, this is fantastic motivation for me! Since I can buy them just up the road from my house I've never tried making them myself. But now I'm determined. As long as I have the obligatory tamarind water running down the back of my hands I will be satisfied. Thanks for posting this!
