Thank you for sharing with us Michele:) My wonderful boyfriend is from Jordan and we've been discussing whether or not we should keep seeing each other as he might be returning after he gets his masters in about 5 years. We both want to spend our lives together but I'm scared to make such a drastic move. I've been trying to do some research on the Middle East to see how tough a transition would be for me. Your article gave me some real insight and gave me a different view versus the one the media tends to depict. This has really opened me up to some new possibilities for my life!!

Wa Allaikum Assalam
Many thanks for your kind comments, May. I feel it is very important to portray my time in KSA in a straightforward and objective manner, as there are, unfortunately, many misperceptions of KSA (and the Arab world) in the west.
My best to you.

Assalam Allaikum,
thank you dear Michele for this nice unbiased article,
I think you are a good person who is honest enough to show the good side of this sort of ""terrifying"" experience just to think of for some westrens,
in contrary to some people who showed and exagerated the bad side,
I salute you from KSA,
Inshalla you will come again for a visit or even work,

take care and God bless you,

Charley: Thank you for your comments. This piece focuses only on my workplace experience in Saudi Arabia. Future articles will include additional experiences with that wonderful US Embassy family ~ it’s in the pipeline.

late_stranger: Many thanks! I’m happy to be able to provide some glimpses into what it’s really like in a place that is such a mystery to many.

Wow, Michelle. Thank you so much for sharing your story - I've always been interested in the Middle East, and I've always wondered what it was actually like for women there, especially the Arabian Peninsula.

I believed the news reports for awhile, but eventually I realized that I didn't trust them blindly about domestic affairs, so why should their foreign reports be automatically true? This is a great insight into Saudi Arabia. Thanks.

Michelle
Great story. But what about the wonderful US Embassy family who virtually "adopted" you to make sure your transition and your access to the US community was quick and painless? Our diplomats are frequently maligned as aloof, selfish and self centered, and everyone hears the stories of diplomats neglecting their US citizens and duties. I believe you were fortunate to have found a US diplomat and his family who enjoyed your company and your husbands and made some admirable efforts to interact on a friendship basis and not as cold bureaucrats. Some of those intimate dinner and dancing sessions were truly unique.
