It's not all bad... annoying sometimes? Yes, but trust me, if you went back to NYC, you'd be missing *most* of those annoying little habits pretty quickly.

...speaking from experience (and hoping to return to Eastern Europe ASAP as soon as my work assignment in the States comes to an end!)

I really enjoyed this article!

Totally know how you feel about the kissing thing - they do the same in the French part of Switzerland. I have a friend there and am obligated to kiss the entire room as she introduces me two seconds before.

Great article Conner...it's too bad we couldn't connect in Havana. Although I can't say I relate, I can totally see what you mean after spending 5 weeks there. You ARE one tough cookie! :)

When traveling there, the hustlers' 'where you from fren?' (or, 'que pais?') isn't too bad, only because I know I only have to deal with it for so long...but to live there and still get it every day? I can't imagine.

I like how you've shown the difficulty of interacting with other foreigners in a different cultural context. I could totally feel the anxiety of walking in a room and not knowing who to kiss and how to act!

Thanks for this slice of expat life that I wouldn't have otherwise gotten to experience (vicariously, that is). And I just checked out your blog--love it!
