These are great tips for teaching in China! I've been teaching English in Guilin for 8 months now, and this article is right on point! Learning Mandarin is also extremely beneficial as far as cultivating relationships go -- Chinese nationals usually don't expect foreigners to speak Chinese, so locals are pleasantly surprised if you're able to master even basic phrases.

I am headed to Shanghai for the month of July. It will be my first time teaching abroad and a long awaited opportunity. Your advice was well received and I plan to communicate while there. Joan Schoenfeld

I'm always amazed when I see teachers going all over the country from small city to small city. It's something I would like to do but never had the guts - too attached to my big city life. Your tips are really good and actually work well in many situations outside of teaching too.
