Ah yes, the body part comments. I think that Korean women are just more frank about physical appearance that we North American gals; all those delicate euphemisms like "curvy" or "Reubenesque" would be laughed out of South Korea. It took me a while to get over how direct women are about how different I look, but 99% of the time, it's not at all malicious, just factual.

I'd love to hear about your experience if you join the dance studio!

I will ALWAYS steer clear of dance classes, but I am 'studying' Jang-gu with a local drumming group. They are very patient with us - the waegookin drummers -even though we often get our deoks and gungs all mixed up. There is something about learning a new skill in the company of nationals that makes you feel like you really belong,

hahah There is actually a dance studio I have been eyeing since I've been in Korea (4 months) and I never have the nerve to go in. Its the language barrier thing and - unlike you - I am not a very good dancer. But maybe one day I'll get up the nerve.

I always want to get to know a culture through non-traditional means. You can learn so much more when you are actively involved than when you are simply watching. I was looking for a clay class, actually, for a while. I should start that up again.

Anyway, all this rambling is to say that this is a great article and it really touches home to those of us in Korea (especially the part about women commenting on your body parts).

Awesome.

Signing up for foreign language dance classes is WAY braver than studying grammar or pounding soju.

Love it! I agree that when we're expats, we have our own ways of fitting in.
