Will Boase

Will Boase is a photographer and writer based in Jinja, Uganda, and working throughout the East Africa region. His interest in photography sprung from a teacher who taught B&W techniques in a converted toilet covered in Magnum quotes. He graduated from Sheffield Hallam University, UK, but was not there to collect his degree as he was working in Kabale, on the Rwanda-Uganda border. He works mainly with NGOs and development agencies, but his work has appeared in newspapers, magazines and websites across the world. In his spare time Will is trying to learn Lusoga (not going so well) and working on a project about rural churches in Northern Uganda (going slightly better). The interior of the famous Cloth Hall (Sukiennice in Polish) in Market Square. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1978, the Cloth Hall was an important venue for international trade for centuries, and because of Krakow's position on the Amber Road it became (and remains) one of the largest amber markets in the world. For the less wealthy there are plenty of cheaper souvenirs on offer here, but nothing says 'glamour' like a large lump of what looks like earwax. Upstairs, away from the crowds, there's a brilliant museum of art, worth visiting solely for the massive painting of horses ("Czworka"), though there are plenty of other stunning works on show.

Inside a tobacco drying barn in Arua District. Tobacco is big business in Uganda, and the process of drying and curing the leaves needs a building like this one. The leaves are hung from the rafters, and then the temperature must be controlled exactly for around 10 days, during which time the chemical makeup of the various compounds within begins to change, which in turn makes for tastier smoke.
