10 volunteer opportunities for free travel

The chance to give something back, an opportunity to share your skills and knowledge, to meet other travellers, or simply to meet the locals.

THERE ARE MANY reasons to volunteer while you’re travelling and there are literally thousands of charities and organisations that look for help from passing travellers.

Many ask for donations or fees to cover costs and others operate as for-profit businesses, but the list below includes only those that cost little or nothing to get involved with and help out:

1. WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms)

www.wwoof.org – Board and lodging is offered in exchange for a day’s work on the farm. Stays available from one week to many years, and with thousands of hosts available in 53 countries there’s an opportunity suitable for everyone.

2. Turtle Teams, Worldwide

A generic name for the thousands of small groups that help threatened sea turtles. Most groups are based at one or two nesting beaches — which are typically at risk from over-exploitation — and appreciate help for even just one night.

Search for groups at the local tourist office close to any tropical beach and help a species come off the endangered list. More information can be found at these larger organisations: www.seaturtles.org and www.cccturtle.org.

3. Conservation Volunteers, Australia and New Zealand

www.conservationvolunteers.com.au – Through various short-term projects in Australia, New Zealand, and a few international locations, you’ll work in teams to protect habitats and promote ecotourism.

A small fee (usually around AUS$100 for a week) is usually required to participate, but covers all food and lodging. UK-based BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) has similar opportunities: www.btcv.org.uk.

4. Sudan Volunteer Programme, Sudan

www.svp-uk.com – Teach English in one of the world’s most impoverished countries. Placements are at schools or universities, but many volunteers help with community projects in additional to their teaching.

Volunteers must pay for their airfare but all other costs are covered, and a small monthly stipend is provided.

5. Appalachian Trail Conference, USA

www.appalachiantrail.org – At over 2,000 miles long, the Appalachian Trail is the classic long trail in the Eastern US and home to almost 2,000 endangered or threatened species.

Volunteers help with trail building and maintenance in return for food and (usually very basic) accommodation.

6. Trip Leader for HF Holidays, Europe

www.hfholidays.co.uk – One of Europe’s most popular walking holiday operators is searching for volunteers to guide their treks. Leaders are provided with accommodation, meals, and the chance to explore Europe in return for sharing their passion and knowledge with the groups they accompany.

7. Help Exchange, Worldwide

www.helpx.net – A website that lists worldwide hosts who are looking for an extra pair of hands, whether it be in their farm or garden, working in schools or on religious projects, building houses or community centres, or simply helping a family take the kids to school.

A small membership fee is required to access host details, but board and lodging is provided in exchange for your work.

8. Peace Corps, Worldwide

www.peacecorps.gov – A unique chance to live and work in another country. Participate in a variety of projects, from healthcare and the environment to business development.

A commitment of 27 months to the placement is required, but for those who are willing, this is a life-changing position. Open only to US residents, but similar projects are available for other nationals with VSO.

9. United Nations Volunteers, Worldwide

www.unv.org – From healthcare and economic development to assisting after natural disasters, the UN offers positions for those that are dedicated to making a difference abroad.

While many positions are open only to experienced professionals, the UN has links to hundreds of international NGOs and QANGOs that are looking for help in similar fields on a less formal basis.

10. Kibbutz Volunteer, Israel

www.kibbutzvolunteer.com – An area that is rarely out of the news, Israel is a land of tight communities but complicated politics.

Being a volunteer here gives you the opportunity to experience this region firsthand while living as part of a socialist community where everything is provided. The region also serves as a good base from which to explore the Middle East and North Africa.

This is just a small sample of what’s on offer; be sure to thoroughly research any options before undertaking a project. And remember, while it’s always nice to get something for free, just because a project is requesting money doesn’t mean the fees aren’t going to a good cause.

Any idea which of these have pretty restricted access in terms of nationality, etc? For example, I know the peace corps is only for Americans, but can foreigners do the Appalachian Trail?

With the exception of the Peace Corps none of the above volunteer oportunites have restrictions on nationalities. Of course, some countires require certain visas(weather they require tourist visas or work visas depend on what you're doing there and the period of time), which is especially relevant for long term projects like the UN, but mostly irrelevant for porjects like helpx and wwoof.
Foreginers can take part in the Appalachian Trail on just a tourist visa.

An insider tip for anyone traveling in the States: Strapped natural resource budgets have the Forset Service and other land management agencies filling in their labor needs with volunteers. Room is free, there is usually a small stipend for food, and you can work in some beautiful places most people traveling in the US never see. In my former life as a conservation officer for the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, we hosted volunteers from the Czech Republic and England. They had the old ranger station to themselves. They were included in all our projects, including horseback excursions to inspect grazing allotments and monitoring the movements of recently re-introduced Rocky Mountain Elk. A win-win situation all around.

Hope they still have their T-shirts "London, Paris, Rome, Mountain City, Nevada"….

I volunteered with SVP in Sudan. It was an amazing experience! The organization is small and you get enough supervision to help you get around, but not enough to inhibit experiencing the culture for yourself. Wholly recommended!

Interesting. I've been looking into international volunteer opportunities as well. Another one I've seen come up in searches is Cross Cultural Solutions. Or habitat for humanity also does volunteer work in other countries, I think.

Young Cameroonian who is really intrested in volunteer work, but facing problem with paying of the required fees.I know the fee is of great importance both to the "accomodating organisation" and volunteer. I did a three year training course permitting me to become a youth and action counsellor. One BIG problem regarding your option of kibbutz-volunteering in Israel: it is definitely not a “good base from which to explore the Middle East and North Africa.” Having an Israeli stamp in your passport will get you denied entrance to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, Kuwait, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Pakistan, etc. Likewise, if you have a stamp from one of these countries in your passport, you will be denied entrance into Israel.

Excellent point about Israel Jill- thanks for pointing that out. The way to get around this problem to either request no stamp in Israel (something they are used to and put on a tempoary slip of paper) or simply to have two passports to travel with. I used both these methods and they work well- you just need to stay on top of which stamp goes where- especially as just an entry stamp from a land border close to Israel can also get you in trouble.

I would like very much to come and help the people, I can do administrative work, labor, working with parents and children, but I can’t do it if I have to pay to volunteer. There is something that doesn’t make sense here. We have millions of Americans without work and have nothing to do and would love to help, but because we are out of work, we can’t pay our way. We don’t want anything but transportation and a place to sleep and a little food and we can bring so much….

I have volunteered twice during my travels already. Ok, I have not volunteered for very long, the first was for a month and the second was for 2 weeks. I have realised that many people that allow volunteers are people that have not lived all their life in country where they presently are. So I found myself learning more about other countries and their mingled cultures than “pure” traditions of Germany and/or Spain. It might have been due to the website I went through though I am still pleased to have met those people, worked with them come rain snow or wind, and learned the mingled cultures as that is what the world has come to – no longer an isolation for the most part.

Please reply to this if you see my view as wrong on incorrectly judged. I am interested to here other experiences.

so many people want to volunteer (just look at this page) ..but not many ever get the chance. why? because about 90% of “volunteer” schemes you find on the internet, require you to pay “admin fees” or something similar. a lot of these companies are run like business’s “(pay 1000) and get a photo with some third world kids!” .
helpx and wwoof are how global volunteering should be run….if people are desperate for volunteers, room and board is nothing (especially in the poorer countries)

just be careful who you volunteer with.

About Us Welcome Hello from our Nepal orphanage! ‘The Innocent Children’s Home’ is a non for profit orphanage that requires the help of volunteers to provide the love and support that is necessity in the development of every child’s life. Your valued help is essential to ensure this orphanage provides the proper development that these children deserve, not to mention to reach the high goals that our organisation has set. Our orphanage is situate in Pokhara, Nepal. It is built to service and house displaced children from remote farming villages that surround this picturesque area. We have many children on our waiting list trying to join our organisation, which we want to provide, however we need you, the valued volunteer to support our organisation and help make this and possible. Our Mission To provide displaced children with a caring, loving home where they can grow, live and learn towards a brighter future. Our Vision To expand our organisation in order to provide more orphaned children with a loving home. To educate our children through the generous time of volunteers from a broad range of cultures. Our Children We have a total of eight displaced children ranging form 4-12 years of age and are expecting two more in the coming week. They all come from very varied and distressing backgrounds, but their needs are all the same; love, care and schooling. Our orphans have mainly come from the surrounding areas of the picturesque Pokhara. Although rich in natural beauty with the Himalayas lingering, the area provides many dangers which has led to the children needing the support of our orphanage. One example, is a brother and sister aged 4 and 5 years. Their mother passed away as a result of cancer and their father died from falling form a tree in search of forage for livestock in the dryer months. The children were left to their extremely poor grandparents who could not afford to upkeep two young children at their tender age. A second example is one of the older boys who’s parents died as a result of a car accident. He and sister were left to their uncle who again could not afford the upkeep of two more children on top of his own. Therefore, the boy had to leave and fend for himself on the streets of Pokhara at the age of ten until the orphanage was opened two years later. Our youngsters (4-7 years old) do not currently attend school, but they are intent on taking as much away from our infrequent stream of volunteers as they can. We have a small ‘class room’ at our orphanage where the children have daily lessons provided by our volunteers and occasionally by local residents of our area. Although this is proving to be very stimulating for the children, they are in desperate need for further funding to be privileged enough to attend school for further development both personally and intellectually. Our older boys (11-12) who have all come from the street are now lucky enough to be able to attend school. They are really excelling in the stable environment of our home and school and their studies and behaviour have really shone as the school year has progressed. 　 Volunteer with Us As our children are here mainly due to distressing circumstances, we need loving, caring and compassionate people to volunteer in our children’s home. To become accustomed to the Nepalese culture, we are offering our volunteers the opportunity of a true Nepal farm stay in a remote village in an area where majority of our displaced children call ‘home’. This will enable you to understand and better relate to our children and therefore be of more benefit to their needs. Not to mention a fantastic opportunity to meet real Nepalese people in their surroundings in areas that are off the tourist trail as well as accessible only by foot. After this orientation into the Nepali lifestyle, you will be accommodated in a private room in the orphanage for the duration of your stay. Please teach our children English, math, games, personal hygiene, drawing, painting, music and many more skills. Location Our home is in a quite location, 20 minutes walk from the popular “Lakeside” district of Pokhara. Easily assessable from Kathmandu by bus, or 5 minute taxi ride from the Pokhara airport. From our garden the magnificent Machapurchata and surrounding Himalaya’s are clearly visible. Pokhara is the gateway to the Annurpuna region of the Himalayas, providing a wide range of trekking adventures. Pokhara is also well renowned for adrenalin sports, from white water rafting to paragliding. Pokhara offers a full range of services, including excellent restaurants, café’s and shopping on the Fewa Lake. The Love Company

I want to travel to Europe, but not as a tourist. I want to travel to Europe to either for work, or to volunteer as well as to meet new people.

I am single, I am a parent with two grown boys. I have done my job raising them. I have done all I can for my two kids and now I am ready to do something fulfilling for me.

I am nervous, about this type of adventure yet at the same time excited.

For the past two years, i have volunteered with The Kaghan Memorial Trust (KMT), a non-profit charitable organisation. KMT provides free education to underprivileged children in Pakistan. It’s first school is being established in the Kaghan Valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, an area devastated by a large earthquake in October, 2005. Hello, I am a looking for a English teacher to work inside my hotel in the Centro Historico of Quito, Ecuador. I own a fun hostel walking distance to all the beautiful sights to see in Quito. I am looking for a teacher who has any tefl, esl, toefl, etc credentials or someone with experience to teach me and my sister English. It would be a total of 4 hours per day but it would be divided between 2 hours with my sister and 2 hours with me. I have an intermediate English level and my sister has a Beginner level. We ask that you can work with us at least 6 days per week and that you can be with us for no less then 2 months but if you can only do one month and a half it will be okay.

I would love to volunteer and travel ….but all that time NOT making money in a paid job? Even if food and board is free in exchange for your work, you still have to spend so much money on travel and other items… having already worked up a student debt, I just can’t afford to not be making money. I think volunteering abroad, or even at home is only for the elite rich whose parents can afford to support them, store all their stuff at their property and house&feed them when they do come home. It’s not self pity when you simply don’t have the cash! I would love to travel to a country in need, and while it would be nice to get paid for it, I would do it for free just for the experience. but there’s no programs out there that don’t require a fee or payment of some sort. The peace corp is totally free, but only if you have a degree.

I utterly agree with caco. Frugality, creativity and hardwork have allowed me to live a bit outside of the box.

I pay rent, taxes, other bills just like any normal person, came up from humble origins….I work hard for about 7 months out of the year, doing regular work for regular money.

You do not need to buy useless garbage, you do not need to watch tv, you do not need to be trapped within a mundane, rat-race, unhealthy typical western lifestyle–to suggest that alternatives such as the one presented in this article are only for the privilaged is utterly absurd.

Examples: why is your home heated by expensive oil? Free firewood exists all over the place. Build your own solar powered hot-water heater. Baking soda instead of shampoo. Grow your own food. Save money, be healthy, harm the environment less and eventually you just may figure out how to free up some time and break out baby, be free.

I agree with Ashleydane, as her situation is much like my own. In a country where education costs an arm and a leg and your parents aren’t rich enough to pay for it, you have to take out a loan. I was fortunate enough to get grants and financial aid to accommodate a large portion of my education but still had to take out several sizable loans which I haven’t even began to pay back. Tuition was $52,000 a year and in reality the only way to make money is to have money. If it was up to me I would walk out of this house and head West. I’m an adventurer and the idea of living off the land is my only dream. Right now money is my only constraint and I need to have a car, an education and this laptop to get anything suitable.
As soon as I get out of debt I’m just going to start walking.

Amen! If traveling is really what you wanna do for a living, you gotta try and find all of the little money saving shortcuts. Travel doesn’t have to be expensive, but the tradeoff comes as less comfort, but often a more genuine experience.

Good article! I have been looking for some good travel humanitarian work which does not involve dropping 3 grand for lodging and scuba equipment.

You seem to have missed the point. 10 months and $300 was all that Caco’s needed! My brother did something similar last winter, travelling all over Europe, and the biggest purchase he probably made was when I visited and we accidentally got on a train that his Europass didn’t cover.
No one pulls thousands of dollars out of thin air. You have to make travel a priority. A student of mine asked me recently how I’ve been “able to travel so much.” I bought a very inexpensive house (so I could save on rent), don’t have cable or a smartphone, buy used cars, clothing, dishes, etc., grow a garden, and use the money I make for things that matter to me, like seeing this beautiful world!

Ashley, a good way to travel and pay off that ridiculously expensive student debt is to teach English overseas in countries that pay well, like South Korea, Japan or if you are a certified teacher, middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia or the UAE. Often these places will pay for your accommodation so all you need to pay are monthly bills which are much cheaper outside North America (we get ripped off!). On top of paying off debt, you have a little bit of extra money to explore the country on weekends and holidays because everything is so damn cheap! I went ice skating last weekend for 1000 won which works out to be less than $1. If you’re like me and aren’t teaching certified, I spent $500 (which I saved up from the two part time jobs I worked back in Canada) on an online teaching certificate. It’s been tough (it’s not a vacation) but it’s also been a great experience.

Sell all your stuff instead of trying to find people to store it for you! You’d make plenty of money to travel for years if you sold everything you own! If that’s too radical for you (and it’s NOT too radical for many people I’ve met travelling, helpxing and couchsurfing), then take the ideas here and use them to maximize the vacation you do get. If you’re in the US, I know we don’t get as much vacation as many, but worse even is that many people don’t take their vacations to rest and refresh. Take a week off of work (which ends up being 9 days if you have weekends), and enjoy a vacation! I went to Paris and Brussels, and spent only about $400 for 5 days, including airfare from the East coast of the US, and had some of the most exciting times!

What you must also understand is that the “free” part of this is not quite true – you really “earn” a lot while traveling and volunteering. My brother, and friend, and I slaved (hehe) in a French kitchen to make an American Thanksgiving meal for 15 people at the suggestion of our couchsurfing host, and the entire experience was worth so much more than the money we saved staying with our host!

Just get out and enjoy in whatever ways you can!

Anyone can volunteer. That’s the whole idea of volunteering. There are plenty of people out there who need and want your help. Saying that ‘people like you can’t do’ it is not going to help them.
What will help them is actually doing something about it.
Look around till you find an organisation that suits your needs.

Trust me best time to travel is when you have nothing holding you back. Like if you are a student jst go abroad if your school allows or transfer somewhere. Or see if your volunteer work can go towards school. I have never been abroad but while in school I traveled around the states. Just wish I could travel for a while and still have a job when I get back…haven’t figured that out yet. I only get about 1-2 weeks of vacation time so hoping I can find some way to go abroad and not spend crazy amount.

I recently went to Cameroon to volunteer. I went though an organisation called LUKMEF (http://www.lukmefcameroon.org/). They didn’t charge a fee at all, but simply organised a placement and took care of the logistics. I paid for flights and food, but considering the state of the economy of Cameroon, everything was really cheap anyway.

If you are considering volunteering, it doesn’t have to be expensive. Remember that you’re giving up YOUR time. Look around till you find a group that respects that.

There are many people out there who aren’t from wealthy descent who see this as an opportunity to reach out to help. It isn’t a matter of being well-funded to be able to do volunteer work.It’s about how much a person is willing to sacrifice certain things to help others. It’s O.K. if you have other commitments where you prioritise it higher than others do, but don’t belittle those who can really help make a difference. caco is actually right. i also have almost no money and never have. I work and save and then go on a trek for as long as I can, and then get a job again. Caco and people who want to to travel the world for cheap, don’t listen to the nay sayers, they are just that, internet trollers!

An idea to start your volunteering career off is by starting in your own backyard. Volunteerism is a serious comittment impacting on the welfare of people who in most cases are in an disadvantageous situation. I have seen many people fall in love with the notion of helping people, animals or the environment only to melt down while on program because their expectations were different to those of the program they are undertaking.

This is what I did…….

I volunteered for an organisation (and eventually was employed by them) who provided support for people with disabilities to take part in recreational activities / holidays in Australia and Overseas.

All cost were met by the organisation including all travel, accomodation and food. Even though i got the opportunity to travel extensively with the people i supported – i knew this was not my holiday. (List your motivations for volunteering in the 1st place – marry them against the organisations expectations and they should almost mirror eachother – if they dont, this isnt the right opportunity
for you).

Also, if you start in your own community and then realise either the volunteer program / task isnt for you, the reprocusions are less than if you were overseas, after paying a program fee, flights etc and then trying to organise another placement or worst yet – a way home.

Another hint – research the volunteer program! (i have seen people join childrens cancer societies like Ronald McDonald house expecting to read books to sick children allday. In actual fact, the best way volunteers can help is by cleaning the bathrooms and assisting with other household duties so families are able to spend more time together or simply just to rest).

There are many cheap options available for less than $1000 depending on the duration and destination.

Corporate Responsibility Sponsorships are usually available through big well known organisations like banks, airlines, insurance companies……. There are also philanthropy grants available for volunteers who need support with their “regular” living expenses in order to volunteer abroad. (they will never match or pay more than what you pay – but instead of paying 2000 per month for you rent / mortgage – they may cover up to 80% to that expense – some will cover 100% but usually have a very strict criteria.

What ever your motivation maybe to volunteer – the decision to even consider it in the first place is a comendable attribute – it simply means YOU want to make the world a better place!

am UMAR SAEED OLDMAN, Ghanaian man of 28
years ,i am working in Ghana here as a health care assistant clinical.I
am somebody who live somebody who like team work and will like to be
part of your highly esteem organization as a volunteer. As the saying
that together we build divided we fall.
      Although i am
looking forward to open an orphanage home in northern Ghana here because
less attention is pay to this children and there are on a streets ,and
some find them self in the internet cafes begging people.,but i
think when there are confine in one places, there can study to become
responsible human being in near future .this will help prevent social
crisis and irresponsible

behaviors in society.

There is also AmeriCorps- but that is a big commitment. And there are plenty of paid travel jobs- like the conservation corps, and a whole ton of positions you can find on the backdoorjobs and coolworks sites.

We either find a way to make our priorities happen or we make excuses via fear and lethargy. It just dawned to me that the majority of our species arrive and exit Earth without even having explored our own home town decently. So often tourists have visited our city/ country and are better acquainted with it’s history and rich heritage than we ourselves are aware.

The moment we begin to THINK like a traveler, everything changes. We can then never complain of any place, since EVERY single place is an advantage. An opportunity to unravel it’s myriad mysteries.
