Amen! If traveling is really what you wanna do for a living, you gotta try and find all of the little money saving shortcuts. Travel doesn't have to be expensive, but the tradeoff comes as less comfort, but often a more genuine experience.

Good article! I have been looking for some good travel humanitarian work which does not involve dropping 3 grand for lodging and scuba equipment.

good report. Maybe you could add: www.staydu.com - has a few possibilites to work abroad as well. Is there a personal ranking in your list? I had several experience with Woofing and I loved it! But it has only farms...! good report by the way!

Anyone can volunteer. That's the whole idea of volunteering. There are plenty of people out there who need and want your help. Saying that 'people like you can't do' it is not going to help them.
What will help them is actually doing something about it.
Look around till you find an organisation that suits your needs.
Here's the one I used when I volunteered in Cameroon. They don't charge a fee, but organise a placement and all the logistics for you :-) http://www.lukmefcameroon.org/

I recently went to Cameroon to volunteer. I went though an organisation called LUKMEF (http://www.lukmefcameroon.org/). They didn't charge a fee at all, but simply organised a placement and took care of the logistics. I paid for flights and food, but considering the state of the economy of Cameroon, everything was really cheap anyway.

If you are considering volunteering, it doesn't have to be expensive. Remember that you're giving up YOUR time. Look around till you find a group that respects that.

I agree with Ashleydane, as her situation is much like my own. In a country where education costs an arm and a leg and your parents aren't rich enough to pay for it, you have to take out a loan. I was fortunate enough to get grants and financial aid to accommodate a large portion of my education but still had to take out several sizable loans which I haven't even began to pay back. Tuition was $52,000 a year and in reality the only way to make money is to have money. If it was up to me I would walk out of this house and head West. I'm an adventurer and the idea of living off the land is my only dream. Right now money is my only constraint and I need to have a car, an education and this laptop to get anything suitable.
As soon as I get out of debt I'm just going to start walking.

Trust me best time to travel is when you have nothing holding you back. Like if you are a student jst go abroad if your school allows or transfer somewhere. Or see if your volunteer work can go towards school. I have never been abroad but while in school I traveled around the states. Just wish I could travel for a while and still have a job when I get back...haven't figured that out yet. I only get about 1-2 weeks of vacation time so hoping I can find some way to go abroad and not spend crazy amount.

Ashley, a good way to travel and pay off that ridiculously expensive student debt is to teach English overseas in countries that pay well, like South Korea, Japan or if you are a certified teacher, middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia or the UAE. Often these places will pay for your accommodation so all you need to pay are monthly bills which are much cheaper outside North America (we get ripped off!). On top of paying off debt, you have a little bit of extra money to explore the country on weekends and holidays because everything is so damn cheap! I went ice skating last weekend for 1000 won which works out to be less than $1. If you're like me and aren't teaching certified, I spent $500 (which I saved up from the two part time jobs I worked back in Canada) on an online teaching certificate. It's been tough (it's not a vacation) but it's also been a great experience.

so we remember what's important right? ... That's right. The love. The care. The self realizations and the joy we share. Yup. Don't give up. Understand the hard stuff. Take a moment and engage. I believe you got to want what you want so much, that you are willing to Dare to be Bold and take the opportunity now. Yes. Jump in. There is always a way. Never mind with what others say. You are off, to go big places today. It is after all, a better time than ever to Play. Why? Well. I say Why not my friend? I get the uncertainty, i feel the shake, I know in my heart for all of our sake, the journey we must take. The time and the money to make. It all can seem confusing and leave so much at stake. Oh but the places you'll go, The tea you will brew and the stories for two. The children and smiles. The Self realization again. You will transcend this realm, Open heart to be led. To a new level of thought. Where new thoughts are thought. Where new sights are seen and the unseen is glistening. So think about what you want? Is it worth it or not? Only you get to choose. Otherwise, who will? No matter the practice or patience of skill, it will all come, in time to a moment of thrill. It will find you and you will sing out. What oh WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT? :) And then the world will smile at you, and you will know that you have so much more to go through, but you'll listen and stop and sit down for real. Thinking again, with a new newer feel. Your cheeks rise, you open your eyes, a smile rests in the middle of your face, and sensations run through you that you can not explain. Yet you are CERTAIN that things must change. You are ready, you are off, oh the places you'll go. Because now, oh now, oh right now you know. That your heart is the guide. Not the money you confide. It's the love that you feel that takes you on a the ride. And then... sigh. For the beauty is in the beginning. You'll see.
hihihihi.... <3 love loviest Miss joY.
