It is a shame that the Mongol Rally was turned into a profit making event between 2006-2007 just as the event got really big. Now the entry fees are a whopping £650 of which none goes to charity! The only charitable aspect is the teams raise money for charity, which gives the Adventurists a great load of free publicity and a 'charity' angle to hand their profit making company on. Ask the Adventurists how much 'they' have raised for charity and you'll find a very different answer. The only organisation that organises a 100% charity rally to Mongolia is Go Help with the Mongolia Charity Rally. All of the money they raise from entry fees and the vehicles goes into a charity run by volunteers, not a private profit making travel company.

@Audrey: thanks for the support! It's like having a second full-time job planning everything and all, but I'm sure it'll all be worth it in the end. No Turkmenistan this time--visas cost too much and are too complicated to procure. I'd love to do Iran and Turkmenistan next time around though...

@Hal: Thanks--I say go ahead and do it if you can!

I've been researching this event a lot lately--great to see it covered here too. Best of luck to you, Scott. I hope to be able to do this one day myself.

Scott, wishing you lots of luck with your adventure! You'll have such great experiences and stories to share afterward.

We ran into the Mongol Rally in Uzbekistan in August, 2007. Each night we'd meet new teams and hear their stories - from playing a ukulele to a police officer in Azerbaijan to get out of a ticket to being led to a brothel in Tbilisi, Georgia since the local assumed that was the only thing three young British guys could be looking for to finding creative ways to get out of paying bribes at each border crossing.

Are you going through Turkmenistan? That place is a trip!
