interesting piece. I was at the mae la camp around the time this story was posted. Your observations were spot on. The situation on the Thai-Burma border needs more publicity, thanks for bringing this to light

What a wonderfully written story. Too often the human faces get lost in the reams of statistics that are thrown at us. Thank you for reminding us that each of those 60,000 has a name and a story.

Thanks Sophie - really good look at a part of the world we forget about all too easily. Thailand's not just a beach paradise. Like the other readers, I was left feeling selfish and saddened by what life deals out to people.

Hi Rebecca,

The camps are managed by UNHCR. You can start by contacting their office in Bangkok. There is also the Thai-Burma Border Consortium (TBBC) which is a group of NGOs working in the camps. If you can't find anything with these two organisations, which I doubt...there is a religious organisation in Mae Lae, you can contact Rev. Dr. Saw Simon, the principal of the Karen Kawthoolai Baptist Bible School and College. I will have a look to see if I can find his details. They are doing brilliant things. I which you luck in your preps for this experience!

I loved your piece! I am thinking of volunteering in one of the refugee camps along the Burmese/Thai border, and was wondering if you knew of any organizations that bring volunteers from the US? thanks!
