That's a lovely post, Julie.

I also enjoyed Lara's post, likening it to the Sydney Harbour Bridge as that's something that I can really relate to. Not all monumental structures stand the test of time though - that's something that remains to be seen.

Great post Julie, media often lacks the personal touch, I think it's one element why people are migrating to blogs to get it back rather then a national newspaper with a agenda.

Lara-

Thanks for your comment, and for the blog post on Cool Travel Guide, which definitely did interest me.
Why do you think it is that journalists and other writers tend to overlook all these other stories about Dubai?

Loved this, Julie. Information goes flying by so quickly on the web that it's really easy to just glimpse it.

Agree, sometimes I tend to read/listen to news or events "from outside", but it's the human element that helps us connect with locals, of any country!

Thanks, Julie. I'm really touched that my little tweeps motivated your post. (Although wish I had better-crafted my rambling description of the pic for you!) The fact that the everyday stories, the human element, and, as Tim points out, the many different perspectives, after repeatedly overlooked in most journalist's desire to either a) gush about the glitz and glam, b) focus on the city-emirate's faults, and c) boast about its current economic woes, is incredibly frustrating for a writer who has lived in the city since 1998. Fortunately, as a writer/blogger, I have lots of opportunities to present other points of view.

You may be interested in my latest blog post elaborating on what I was also alluding to, i.e. the parallels with the Sydney Harbour Bridge and other iconic buildings, and why Burj Khalifa is a source of such national pride.

Thanks again for the kind words! :)
