"If Wal-Mart let its employees unionize, it’d have to pay them more, and consequently have fewer of them, or raise its prices and hurt consumers."

Or pay its employees more, keep the same number of employees, and make a tiny dent in its massive profits. Ah yes, Wal-Mart, defender of the poor worldwide!

As for my status as a Citizen of the World (which, by the way, I never claimed to be), well, since we were talking specific minimum wage policies (um, not so applicable to China?) I assumed we were talking about American Wal-Marts and American poor people. I'm not even American - just following the discussion at hand.

Right on, Julie. This issue is only going to get more pressing. The more self-sufficient we are within out local communities, the better we'll be at riding out crises of all kinds.

Eva,
"Why does it source all (or nearly all) its goods from the cheapest possible overseas sources, leaving American factories to close?"

Chinese poor people are people too. Don't they need the jobs 1,000 times more than we do anyway? What's all this talk about "AMERICAN factories," you citizen of the world?

If Wal-Mart let its employees unionize, it'd have to pay them more, and consequently have fewer of them, or raise its prices and hurt consumers.

If Wal-Mart is "good for poor people" then why does it shut down any store that attempts to unionize to improve their working conditions? Why does it source all (or nearly all) its goods from the cheapest possible overseas sources, leaving American factories to close?

Has it occurred to you that "poor people" might find local job growth and security, strong local downtowns, and a healthier environment (since big box stores are entirely dependent on car culture) to be at least as useful as cheap clothes from China?

Wal-Mart is in favor of raising the minimum wage because it pays it's employees higher than MW, and it knows many of its competitors can't and don't.

Wal-Mart also allows poor people to buy clothes and food cheaply. I'd love all stores to be small and quaint too, but Wal-Mart really is good for poor people.

If you don't think it is, why do they shop there? 'Cuz they're dumb?
