I recently did the American Red Cross online course and signed up to be a volunteer at my local chapter. In New York City, where I am a volunteer, we respond to as many as 7 local emergencies in a day--I have been to 3 fires in an 8-hour shift, a few times. It also gives you the experience to be deployed to large national disasters. Joining the Red Cross and getting trained as a disaster response volunteer allows you to respond to local disasters such as fires, floods, and storms.
