Can't quite get my head around this. I understand belief in the sacred nature of Earth as a religion (as Julie and David have pointed out, this was central to our earliest belief systems).

But *climate change* as a belief system held strongly enough to be viewed legally as a religion? Seems the wrong way round, doesn't it? Also, is this gonna give fuel to climate change deniers, by lumping it in with religion?

I think I'm probably missing the point. And if it does give action on these issues some teeth, then I agree it is a positive step.

Odd that the ruling comes from the same judge who ruled "An Inconvenient Truth" was so biased...!

Wow, that's pretty interesting. I think we'll definitely see an increase in lawsuits, but like you said Julie, maybe bringing some of these things to corporate attention isn't the worst thing...

True, David, there is a correlation there. Still, as far as legal matters are concerned, I think this ruling is a cross between ridiculous and dangerous.

Exactly, David. As I was writing this, I was thinking about some of the earth-based religions that have existed for centuries. It's nice to see some judicial recognition, though.

it seems to me that considering the earth 'holy' and wanting one's actions to preserve life for future generations has been at center of indigenous peoples' 'religion' everywhere.
