May is National Bike Month in the US
May is National Bike Month in the United States, but you don’t have to live here to make the decision to take the world on two wheels.
The Matador team is fired up by biking.
Not only is traveling on two wheels better for the environment than almost any other form of transportation, it’s an activity that creates almost instant communities, as the bike documentary, “VEER,” makes evident:
Matador has dozens of cycling articles in its archives. There’s advice about how to choose a bike and gear up for the road, as well as expert insight about which cities are friendliest to cyclers.
Here are some other favorites:
8 Steps for Successful Self-Supported Bicycle Tours
Cycling guides for destinations as distant as Montana and Vietnam’s Highway 1.
If you’re in the US, check out local meet-ups and other Bike Month events in these cities:
New York City
Philadelphia
Washington, D.C.
Minneapolis/St. Paul
San Francisco and Bay Area
Portland, OR

Thanks for the community links, Julie.
Yay…biking! Not sure how it is where you are, but the cycling movement here in Melbourne seems to be gaining a lot of momentum.
Great resource–all these links in one spot!
Carlo-
I was just at a bike film festival here in NYC earlier this week and there was lots of excitement about the cycling movement gaining momentum– perhaps finally catching up to the West Coast of the US! A few local advocates and activists noted that a new city Department of Transportation director did quite a bit to advance the movement by fast-tracking the installation of bike lanes around the city… I’d still like to see fewer cars here, though!
Great Article!
Up here in Midland, Ontario Canada we have started our own Bike Day event called Dock to Dock and hope to grow it every year and promote bike culture and awareness. 2 of us came up with the idea last year and we had over 100 riders come out for the event…. this year more people and businesses are involved and we hope to get over 200 riders for the event…
All it takes is some commitment and passion and others who are like-minded will eventually come on board. Hopefully in 5 years we can have a BIKE WEEK up here in our small town!
Go Bikes!
