I don’t know how to feel about it either. How is the pagent set up? Are all the women celebrated in someway? Are they given outlets too express how they feel or are they being trained to be more “respectable”. Are women moderating and monitoring the growth of these women or are men?

Great article and topic! The message is a contradictory one. Many of these women are trapped in every sense of the word. I don’t view beauty contests as the correct message. I think teaching them to discover their inner uniqueness, and learning how to apply it in so many areas of their lives would be more productive in the end.

I agree that the juxtaposition of “captive” and “beauty” is not a positive one. At all.

There was a similar contest in Cambodia for victims of landmines. The Cambodian government cancelled it and there were a lot of bad feelings from advocacy groups for landmine victims.

I’l have to admit I’m not much of a beauty contest watcher myself, just not my kind of thing, but to a lot of women getting all made up and stuff is what they like to do. If it makes them happy I’m all for it.

I would like to hope that the authorities at the prison were well-intentioned, but I agree that this may not be the best way to celebrate womanhood.

Gabriela, you’ve raised some excellent points. I’m not exactly sure what to think of this. I mean for the women in the it would surely be something to break the monotony of the daily routine, but is it re-enforcing a fetish for the “captive beauty”?

Seriousness aside, that videographer must have been a man and one with a ‘Sir Mix-a-Lot” complex…
