This past Easter long weekend we packed up the car and headed North up the Sea to Sky Hwy towards Whistler from Vancouver and climbed the Chief. It was a beautiful (what felt like) summer day and we had an absolute blast! If you are looking for a fun day hike that is a little more rural than Vancouver’s Grouse Grind, then I suggest taking a stab at The Chief!
It’s a beginner’s type hike that offers an amazing 360 degree view of Howe Sound, Garibaldi Park, The Lions and beyond! It’s well marked, however I must admit I let someone else lead the way while I took shots and we may have taken a right when we should have gone left; but it’s all about the adventure! As you climb up the mountain you will come to forks in the trail which give you the option to head towards the 1st, 2nd or 3rd peak. We chose to skip the first and second peaks and went straight for the third, which took us about four hours to get up – keep in mind we headed in the wrong direction for a good while before we realized we were in the middle of no where – and then about 2 hours to get down. Being early spring we found running water on numerous parts of the trail and we did roll the dice and filled up our water bottles many times throughout the hike, although I wouldn’t count on that later in the year, or recommend it for that matter!
