The Dancing Santa
When I arrived in Taiwan to teach English, I would never have imagined that I would be onstage dressed as Santa Claus and dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance”, while three of my Chinese co-teachers yelled “Shake your bum-bum!”. That’s what I got though. Life’s a box of chocolates I guess.
In Taiwan, Kindergarten Christmas Shows are extremely important events. The parents of students (remember: the ones paying the tuition) rarely get an opportunity to see their kids speak English, and may not understand English well themselves. Schools put a lot of effort into making a Christmas show that looks really good, and sometimes I think that they forget that the “actors” and “singers” they are working with are five or six years old.
The theme for our show was “Superstar”, so there were a lot of flashing lights, a lot of dancing, and very little that could be related back to Christmas.
My girlfriend Emily managed to take this video as I dance with my class. You can see it here:

Justin,
You’re a good sport. Ya never know what they’re gonna throw at you sometimes. When I play Santa here in Okinawa, I wind up having to dance to the Macarena; Christmas songs in Japanese !
