TALING CHAN, at first glance, doesn’t seem particularly exceptional but this place is actually more enjoyable than many more popular floating markets.
Despite that locals working hard ensure Taling Chan remains photogenic, as visitors it’s easy to forget some common and simple ettiquette, such as asking for permission before taking a picture. Many travellers feel they have a right to takephotos of locals simply because they are in a touristic area.
Do you ever think of giving something back to locals while travelling?
Personally, I feel that ‘giving back’ doesn’t have to mean donating money (which is tricky as you don’t know where it’s going), but can be a simple gesture of kindness. I realised that thanks to an artist from the Ukraine – Nataliya Dyachenko – who I met while she was doing a painting of one of the ladies from the floating market. Once she finished it, she handed it back to the lady.
The artist’s reward was a big smile – that’s priceless.
