The Pursuit of Presidential Produce

I’m not quite sure why it took a magazine based in San Francisco to alert me to the new opening of a Farmer’s Market at the White house, but I’m glad I’m “worldy” enough to be reading it (ed- cue sarcasm for those who don’t know me).
Personally, I’ve been a big fan of Eastern Market this summer. Capitol Hill is the perfectly quaint neighborhood to shop for fresh mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes, freshly baked whole grain baguette, homemade hummus and zucchini and squash. These are the staples in my summer diet, but there’s much more to offer.
But something about opening a market by the WH makes me think it will be extra-glamorous or exciting. We’ll have to find out.
Meanwhile, Ode, which published the article on the upcoming debut, writes:
Knowing where and how your food is grown is a long lost part of life. It is also a story of accepting nature (and life) as it is whether there are blemishes, scant years or abundance. Ultimately, it also shares the notion of everyone working and sharing success together.
Fresh produce is a timeless tale from ancient cultures to modern times. A tale of aphrodisiacs; offerings to the gods; or now, a market for a president.
How incredibly chic! And by the way, beautifully put–“A long lost part of life…accepting nature (and life) as it is whether there are blemishes, scant years or abundance.”
Though somewhat reminiscent of a Carrie Bradshaw column (…and I hate to mention her; really, she is unbelievably whiney and unrealistic about love), I still think this article speaks a truism about the romanticism of the American farmer’s market.
