The Wheels Have Started to Turn
Actually they started to turn a long time ago. The intention was set, the dreams dreamt and movement is happening. I’ve written before about my desire to bike to the Appalachian Trail and begin another thru-hike. I also felt the pull of continuing my regular work. There will always be that tension of roots and wings. But now I can say I gave it my best shot - the short story is that the bulk of my hours at my job have been drastically reduced. I’ve been saving my money and spring is coming. Sounds like all the makings for a change in routine.
There is this one pesky little issue which wants to thwart my plans - and that is this condo I own. Due to an ongoing lawsuit between our HOA and the builder, no one can sell right now. But I can rent it out. Now all I have to do is find someone who wants to spend the next year in Boulder, CO in a lovely furnished condo and I am off. I won’t have the time to ride my bike east, but I can quickly pull together what I need for a thru-hike and be on my way. It is my intention to do this earth-bound, that is, no flying. I want to travel the contour of the world, through the country, cities and byways, slowly making my way to the next point, most likely by bus from Boulder to Denver to Springer Mountain and walking to Katahdin, then across Canada by train. Ideally, I’d love to have a teaching contract set up in Asia for the fall (and here I might have to forego the surface travel and succumb to air travel) to finish out my year.
After that – who knows? I’m a firm believer in serendipity and the promise that “something will happen”. It always does.
