Superheroes on Bikes
Captain Carrot has red hair and wears an orange cape. Green stalks sprout from his bike helmet.
Queen Aubergine’s cape is purple, and Cassiopea’s cape is made of prayer flags.
These superheroes are riding their bikes around Vermont, doing good deeds. Yesterday they helped a surprised and grateful woman renovate her dining room, right now they’re picking beans at the Sterling College farm.
I first heard of the Superhero Bikers from Heather Crawford, a Dragons instructor who led a program in Guatemala this summer. When Heather told me about the Vermont ride, I invited her to swing through Craftsbury Common.
They arrived sweaty and glowing yesterday evening, and we swam in the pond, ate bread and cheese and sat around a campfire in the back field.
How cool, I thought – a group of strangers coming together to do something fun and wacky and inspiring. Hanging with the superheroes reminded me of the limitless possibilities when people embark on a journey with good humor and good intentions.
There are superhero rides all over the country, and sometimes overseas. There’s no website to link to, because the emphasis is on personal human interactions.
But if you’re driving along and see a group of costumed bikers hauling trailers of camping gear and wearing capes, stop and say hello.

Everybody needs superheroes! Any reason why they dress as vegetables?

While reading the first two sentences I thought this piece was allegorical. Then I realized it was literal! How cool.

Too awesome, send them up to Canada so they can mow my lawn.
