Shushtar is an ancient fortress city that was built as an island in the middle of one of Iran’s largest rivers, the Karun.

In 1973, Shushtar New Town was built across the river from the old town, which had been in decline for years.

The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, a large irrigation complex, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.

It is possible to go swimming, boating, and kayaking in the area.
