Baghdad isn’t currently high on the list of must-visit cities for many travelers. If you are thinking to go, it’s important to do your research thoroughly beforehand, and check out our article on How to: Travel to Iraq without getting killed.

Many sites were destroyed and / or looted during the 2003 invasion, such as the National Museum of Iraq, and the Hands of Victory arches; the historical part of the city has important buildings such as the Abbasid Palace and the al-Mustansiriyah School.

The Baghdad Zoo used to be the largest in the Middle East, and although many of the animals were killed shortly after the invasion, the zoo has now been reopened.
