Tyre
Around 80km south of Beirut on the Mediterranean coast, Tyre was originally a fortified Phoenician city-island and associated mainland settlement.
Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the ancient remains of Tyre are split into three sections: the ruins of a largely Roman-era town on what used to be the island; the nearby remains of a Crusader castle; and a little further away, a necropolis and one of the largest Roman hippodromes ever discovered.
If ancient history isn’t so much your thing, Tyre has a busy fishing port and covered souk, a mazy Christian quarter, and it’s also possible to go skin diving amongst the ancient Phoenician remains.
