Jericho
Just 16 kilometres north of the Dead Sea, Jericho is the lowest continually inhabited place on Earth, and may be the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. You can visit the Hasmonean Palace, which might have been used by King Herod, or one of the ancient synagogues such as the Jericho Synagoue, some of which have mosaic floors. Just outside the old city is the Mount of Temptation, where Christ fasted and was tempted by the Devil after being baptised. You can also see Elisha’s Spring for yourself, which used to provide the city with its water.
