Might add a little fiction to this list . . . Alejo Carpentier wrote a beautiful book called The Lost Steps . . . Mario Vargas Llosa and his book The Storyteller. Being an old guy and a bit of a travel writing historian, Eothen by Alexander Kinglake, and The Road to Oxiana by Robert Byron are both Classics and feed into one of my All-Time Favorite writers - of any kind/genre - Bruce Chatwin. Patrick Leigh Fermor produced some classics of his own, A Time to Keep Silence being one of my favorites. And as for adventure/travel writing, Maurice Herzog's book on K-2 is - to use an often treadless cliche (though in this case, it's not) - Epic.

Great list. I love Chinua Achebe. I'll have to venture into reading some Heinrich Herrer. I love the movie Seven Years in Tibet...I should probably finally read the book.

Thanks for these guys, I'll add 'em to my list. I'd also like to suggest the indomitable Freya Stark, whose Valley of the Assassins blew my mind: http://www.complete-review.com/reviews/travel/starkf1.htm
