Michelle Schusterman reviews the CoolCare mini ceramic hair straightener.

WARNING: This flat iron is almost unbearably cute.

Honestly, I giggled when I opened the case. Not laughed. Giggled. A bit smaller and I’d expect to see this thing in a Salon Stylist Barbie box.

Because it’s not just small; it’s pink. Very, very pink.

Still, once I thought about how much room packing my regular flat iron takes up in my suitcase, I was willing to give it a try. With the fifty foot (slight exaggeration) cord wrapped around it, it fills up the front zipper pocket and bulges out the front of my duffel bag.

The CoolCare mini flat iron comes with a case. (White and pink. Like I said – cute.) With the flat iron inside, it’s about the size and weight of a child’s pencil case, easy to slip inside the smallest of purses.

My concern was whether or not it would actually work, and how long it would take to do the job. My hair is thick and curly; I’ve got my regular straightening process down to about ten minutes, and I worried that the tiny size would tack more time onto my morning routine.

I tried it. Ten minutes on the nose.

It worked every bit as well as my regular flat iron, and I have to say I think I actually prefer it for the top layer. Getting up next to the part is difficult with a regular sized straightener, but this flat iron is small enough to get close, making it easier to do a more detailed job.

The plates are ceramic and heat up to 200 degrees Celsius in about a minute. The CoolCare mini flat iron and carrying case together are available to order online for a total of $19.95, plus $5.95 for shipping.
