Managing editor and recent mom, Julie Schwietert reviews the latest in baby travel gear.

I kid you not when I say that it took the entire flight from New York to Charlotte to figure out how to use the FlyeBaby, a hammock-like chair for babies that uses your tray table as support. Take that fact with a grain of salt, though; I’m spatially challenged.

Once I untangled all the restraints and tested every possible interpretation of the instructions, I celebrated my “Aha” moment, popped Mariel into the chair, and enjoyed 10 minutes of hands-free parenting.

I wouldn’t say the FlyeBaby is an indispensable piece of travel gear for parents, even though you can also use the FlyeBaby on land as a high chair or lounge chair.

And at $49.99, the FlyeBaby is likely to be a hard sell for budget travelers. Then there’s the fact that the chair is advertised for use up to 25 pounds, which means that the lifespan of this purchase is fairly short… unless you plan to have more kids.

All that being said, this is a pretty neat little invention. The hammock’s gentle restraints keep the baby safe and the chair is a nice alternative to keeping your infant on your lap throughout the entire flight.

Looks cool…except for when the dude in front of you decides to recline.

Good point Hal. Seems like the baby would get a bit scrunched up in that case….

Expensive for such a little-use item!

I’m desperately trying to figure out how i’m going to survive an 18 hour flight with a (probably teething) infant without being murdered by everyone on board.. so i do appreciate that people are trying to address the issue, at least!
