Sarah, what a great piece.

I think what strikes me most about it is that this realization of what it means not to be first or "good enough" came to you in Mexico. So many of us leave the US and are happy to find the more laid back, non-pressured life as expats. I have most definitely had that experience in Argentina.

It's a difficult habit to shake being first, but it serves us all well to move past it. Also why writing a letter to Fourth is so apropos. Isn't that the way so many people say goodbye to people, feelings and other unwanted or uncomfortable parts of their lives?

Thank you for this!

Did 15 marathons; all in Japan. Never tried a 10K. Always thought the scenery was better from the rear of the pack. Just to finish is an accomplishment. I won't run to catch a taxi in the rain, anymore. Get a runner's high just walking. Great post. It brought back memories.

Cheers,
Mike

From 57th place - man, what's it like up there in front of the pack? Do you ever get lost not having the rest of the race to follow? That was always my concern on poorly marked courses.

Awesome piece. Makes me miss running. And hooray for plastic-bag water.

Beautiful piece Sarah. Totally crappy that you aren't in the top three, but I'll bet you could outwrite those other women any day.

I chuckled in recognition of inspiration kicking in at the most inopportune of times. But as long as it comes back later, it's a good thing. Staring at a computer and hoping for inspiration is a tried and true way for it NOT to happen.

Yay for fourth place!

Wow, Sarah. I can relate to this - not because I run - but because of the competitive mind frame that is ultimately a contest that happens inside. I love this letter!
