While you’re celebrating freedom and independence and General American Awesomeness this weekend, here’s a short (yet challenging!) American history quiz laid out in two simple pictures.

Topic: Transportation

Question: How did airport security go from this:

Security screening at Columbia, SC airport, 1973. Photo by Hunter Desportes.

To this:

Security screening at Denver airport, 2009. Photo by Inha Leex Hale

Fill in the blank.

(Bonus: These pictures were taken 36 years apart from each other. What do you think we’ll see 36 years from today?)

I think you’re overstating things a bit. I’ve been to Gibraltar as well, and Santorini, and other small airports around the world, and don’t think there’s a huge difference between then and now. Even huge airports like LAX don’t really have that many people because security checkpoints are split up by terminals. You’ve actually chosen the largest airport in the world (it’s the third largest overall) that uses one huge security checkpoint. Bashing airport security has become de rigueur these days, and no doubt there is much to criticize, but you’re not really saying anything new here. I think this is a case of golden age thinking, to be honest.

But, the Columbia airport still looks like that today. We flew in and out a couple time instead of Charlotte, and we felt like we had the airport to ourselves. It is a stark contrast though.

In Indonesia we still on condition as first picture. Yes, we are 36 years late.

Some airports around the world today are even more lax than the one you show from Columbia above. I think this would make a good comparison to show before and after photos of several photos. At the very least, I think it would make for a better comparison if you at least showed the same airport. But in any case, yes, air travel is different than it used to be, but most things have changed over the course of 36 years.
