What backpack did you use to carry your baby and what infant travel bed fit into your backpack? Sounds great, thanks for the tips.

Hey Lisa,
no worries. i just had a baby 8 months ago and was a nomad/explorer/trekking guide/etc. and life is still so much fun with her. she has been to many countries already and we are currently living in nepal. i take her everywhere- camping, walking, every place i go and it is lovely. you will do great! all of my travels have been with just me and her and it's a challenge but people everywhere help out. i am so amazed how friendly everyone is. a couple tips are to breast feed exclusively and to wear him/her in a wrap so you can easily use your hands. i am loving all the new challenges and daily adventures with her. your life will completely change but there's no reason to end your travels. i'm planning a week or so long trek in the himalayas in a couple weeks. can't wait!

hi there, hope you don't mind me writing. I was reading through websites trying to gather information on backpacking with a baby.
I am 25 weeks pregnant now and due in april 2010 and then will have six months off maternity leave. I would love to get some travel done in this time with the baby and trying to plan a trip to go to argentina for 4-6 weeks when the baby will be 4 months.
Can I ask where you went and how easy it was to get around?
Also, do you think it would be possible to do this as a single parent?
I have travelled for 14 months though south east asia so quite a bit of experience.

Any advice you could give would be great.

Thanks.

Great article! We traveled with our 4 month old twin boys to Argentina for 3 weeks and while it was harder than how we were previously used to traveling, we had so much fun with them.
I would advise people to look closely at the country you are traveling in and how friendly they are to babies/children.
For instance, I would not suggest the USA! Argentina on the other hand...we were treated like gold.

I'm getting the impression that this advice and the ideas given are geared towards folks with only one kid. The thoughts from somebody say with a 1 and 2 year old and one on the way would be of the ultimate value. Maybe that sounds over the top, but I'm just saying, it seems like not too many people here are speaking with a whole lot of perspective. One kid, especially a younger baby, is a piece of cake, although I do completely understand why first-time parents might have a hard time experiencing it as such, and in that regard I do see this article as encouraging for some, but still it would be awesome to hear more about those say with a toddler and/or multiple kids taking on adventures.

Freedom can be found in family not just in an individual and to lift your family, take them with you on your travels from my point of view will only enhance them as individuals as they grow into adults. The challenges of a family on the road are just different to the challenges of a family settling within society but to those with insight, to share both with your children, in my mind is truly a gift.

Thanks for this story! With any luck we'll be joining the 'parent club' soon and it's comforting to read that traveling doesn't have to end when babies are born! Everyone keeps saying, 'oh, I'm so glad you're traveling now before you settle down.' I hope we never settle down!
