Hi Leigh, nice post! You have summarized some really good points. Both the host and the guest need to be cooperative. I'd suggest you checkout http://volunteerstays.com/, the site lets you find and choose a couch surfer that best meets your criteria. Everything is pretty much clearly laid out in the profiles so both the host and the couch surfer are clear about the expectations beforehand.

I love the worldwide Couchsurfing community. It's introduced me to some great people that I never would have met otherwise. And when I've found myself in living situations where I was unable to host (usually because of a roommate's hestitation), I've really enjoyed being a part of the CS community in other ways. I lived in Vancouver where the local CS group was an active, friendly and lively bunch. Got a free afternoon and looking for a hiking companion? Post it on the group forum! Want to organize a veggie potluck or Free Hugs? Or a camping trip? Or see your favourite band that's coming to town? Post, post, post and I guarantee you will find some fun people to share the experience. The local group is a great resource when you first arrive in a city, either to live or visit. Got questions about what neighbourhood to live in or what things to see if you have a limited time? People are always willing to share their knowledge and help a fellow surfer.

I don't think I would want to live in a place again that didn't welcome couchsurfers. I think it's important to open our doors with love, trust and warmth and hope we encourage people to match that. As a host or a surfer, respect is key. Be as direct as you can about your needs or expectations. One thing I have sometimes noticed is that people can be - how shall I say - very enthusiastic about their travels and experiences. And while that's great, be sure to give the other person a chance to share their experiences. Ask questions and take the time to get to know them as well.

Happy couchsurfing!

You are the one that got me introduced to Couchsurfing (and assured me that it was OK even if I didn't have a place to host people) and our experiences so far have been wonderful. We've really met some unique people that we'll likely stay friends with for a long time.

Dan and I have been fortunate enough to Couchsurf with your family. Our visit to Salta would have been so different without the late nights of wine and good food, crazy birthday parties and endless conversations. Thank you again!
