What a beautifully written piece. The way you write flows so natural and soft. It's amazing to think about our relation to a different culture's food. For instance, how is Mexican food my favorite (sounds like one of yours, too!) when I am a white girl from Midwest USA with a Polish heritage? There's something about Latin cuisine that moves me in ways no others have. You've done a great job expressing that!

I also tried a margarita at my job tonight that made my tongue and cheeks ache in a way that naturally brought a smile to my face. Coincidence? I think not!

Writing to aspire to, Sarah, thanks. Beautifully evocative and totally sums up how I feel about food and travel. A much more poetic justification of my gluttony than I could have come up with!

Loved your description of the squash flowers. It's true that foods and smells can conjure up so many memories of culture and place. I brought all sorts of packages of Pakistani and Indian spices back with me from Lahore, and when I feel a pang of mourning for being stuck in the US getting my degree I cook up some chicken jalfrezi and lamb curry.

A great piece, Sarah. I was half-way through before I realized you were the author and went back and checked the byline to verify it.

I'm salivating with your descriptions and how well you've connected the art of cooking/eating to the adventure and lure of a distant culture. Sumptuous!

Wow, tremendous writing! I harbor many of the same feelings regarding food and place, but could never have written them so compellingly.

This was so well-written and sensual! We love finding the local foods, textures, and flavors of a community as well, but this really pinned down exactly what is so precious and alluring about it.
