Be persecuted is awesome. China has been putting out a lot of decent black metal lately. I also recommend Martyrdom, zuriaake and The illusion of Dawn. I think china has the right culture for metal!

Hi Mara,

I really liked your article, even though I'm not the biggest black metal fan on the planet. I'm a lifelong metalhead and most of the time when I read articles on metal in non-metal medias, I perceive either a lack of understanding of its nature or a slight ironic tone to the text. Your article is refreshing, because you show a lot of respect and passion for this music. And you know your stuff. Thanks! I would also suggest fans to check out Rudra, from Singapore.

Is there a way to get my hands on your thesis? Thanks again,

Stéphane

I just happened across this from a google search. Very cool list, it's nice to see some lesser known black metal bands getting some recognition. There's gotta be 1000 pages hailing "mayhem, burzum, darkthrone, and emporer." I love em all but cool list, way to keep it new, and representational of the rest of the world!

Well, unexpected places in general. I only included Melechesh because they also deal with Middle Eastern themes in general, many of which *do* deal with cultures that lie in developing countries. Of course I know Israel isn't in the developing world :P My bad...
