lola~ imagine this! i was in rome, italy at the end of a university of georgia 3 month long art trimester heading home. this is when you were a baby or not born yet. fall 1988? a friend of mine and i saw posters for fela's performance ( i had been a fan for a while) somewhere out of the center city and decided to take a cab out there.
amazing.
the event took place in a large circus like tent. we were frisked for weapons and found seats 1/2 down on the left side.
the crowd was wild. fela was wild...
it was so beautiful
thanks for reminding me of that night!

A number of years ago I was looking through a book of old, unpublished fashion photos ("Unseen Vogue"), and saw this cool picture of a model posing with the band Koola Lobitos led by Fela Kuti. Based on the picture and its depiction of a lost era, I proceeded to download some tunes, and have liked Fela Kuti ever since.

But what a strange connection of dots: From an unpublished picture for Vogue by the late British photographer Brian Duffy, to the internet, and now here on Matador. Something magical going on with him, that's for sure.

I just learned of Fela Kuti earlier this year. Cool to read more about his life (and many wives ;). Super cool to come to the end of the article and see the pic of Sean Kuti on the Stern Grove stage, where I've also performed!

Lola: This is great stuff. I couldn't think of a more knowledgable person in the network to write this article. I can neither confirm nor deny my downloaded Fela Kuti collection.
