I grew up in HongKong. My mother forbid any of us to eat at those places, especially late at night. Hygiene was not their concern and late at night the crowd was less than desirable. The food may be good but not worth the risk. Soooo. 18 years growing up in Hong Kong, never ate off the street.

NYC, i lived in for 4 years, and truly the city has everything to offer. Once you look for ethnic food you must leave Manhattan and go to Queens or Brooklyn.
The best indian/pakistan food is in Jackson Heights, Chinese food in Flushing last stop on the no. 7 train.

Canton??? You mean Guangzhou? No one has called it Canton since way before the British left. I bet he's still going to Peking as well. Or does he mean Kowloon?

As for Bangkok, the tuk-tuk horror reality is way worse than the rumors. I never, never am so prejudged but I will say that *any* tuk-tuk driver will charge you more than a taxi, and try to take you to their friend's jewel shops if you're stupid enough to ask them for a tour. Find a taxi driver instead. And if you want nothing but pad thai and banana pancakes, sure, stay on Khao Sanh Road with all the other backpackers. If you want real Thai food, get the hell away from there.

In Madrid, just get tapas and forget dinner. You don't need to wait so later, either.
