So true about the Swedish manuals!!! OK, not a hostel but I remember stumbling into a second-hand bookshop on Jalan Jaksa in Jakarta and it was full of air-conditioning maintenance manuals and similar stuff... But hey, at least the books were mostly in English.

Dear travelers,

I noticed that some of you agree with the idea to remove ''one hundred years of solitude'' of the hostels' bookshelves. Myself i'm an inhabitant of the imaginary town, Though i'm one of those europeans who loved to travel, a couple of years ago i decided to settle down and start a business in Aracataca. Macondo? Yes Aracataca, the land where Garcia Marquez was born and where he grew up to feed his imagination... If you did not like 100 years of solitude I challenge you to take another look at it, to find out that there's not so much fiction as you thought...
Macondo is real, it's in the heart of Aracataca.
I invite you all to come down to the Gypsy Residence, where we'll help you to discover Macondo in the heart of Aracataca..

It is real, it is magnificent and it openes up a whole new world for you.
Macondo is not a place, it is a state of mind which allows you to see what you want, and how you want to see it...
I challenge you.

Also Howard Marks' Mr. Nice seemed pretty ubiquitous in SE Asia when I was there. Along with The Life of Pi. Both good but not worth re-reading at every single stop.

Regarding "100 Years...", I think it's a book you pretty much have to read in one sitting, otherwise it's easy to get lost and bored. I read it on a flight from Chicago to Seoul, throughout the week in Korea and finished it on my way back to the U.S. Had I not read it that way, I don't know if I would like it as much as I do.

Great round-up of books! I love Marquez & Hundred Years of Solitude as well, but I'm with you—it took me a few tries before I didn't feel lost.

I always feel kinda dumb or that I'm missing something because I didn't fall in love with "100 Years..."

Fortunately, I've met others who say the same. And you!
