**UPDATE 5/11/10 Congratulations to @metimisanthropy, who is the winner of of this contest. We look forward to working with you at MatadorU. Thanks to everyone who entered. **

*UPDATE 5/6/10 * The contest is now officially closed. Thanks to everyone who entered and left a comment. We’ll be posting the winner next week.

JUST OVER two weeks ago we launched the Travel Photography program at MatadorU.

The new program comprehensively covers travel photography skills, equipment, and the steps needed to publish work, build an internet presence, and expand your network of colleagues and markets.

In addition to Matador Editors, guest photographers–some who’ve published work in National Geographic and Smithsonian–work with students providing periodic portfolio reviews.

We’ve been really stoked with the initial wave of students who have enrolled and particularly the interaction between students and teachers going on in the forums.

As a way of continuing to spread the word, we wanted to offer a new contest with the prize of free enrollment to your choice of either the Travel Photography or Travel Writing programs.

You can participate in the contest in less than 30 seconds. Here’s how: :

1) Make sure you follow us @MatadorNetwork so we can get in touch if you win.

2) Post the tweet below to your own Twitter account to help us spread the word about the contest.

3) Leave your @twitter_user_name in the comments below, along with the reason why why you want to join MatadorU.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I WON?

Winners will be announced at the end of the contest via twitter, and also update here via a post at Matador.

Good luck to everyone, and we look forward to announcing the winner!

I’ve been trying to become a travel writer for the past six months, and while I’ve had one great paid assignment, I’ve had trouble gaining traction since. Because of this, I’ve been wanting to take the Matador U Travel Writing course. After hearing current students rave about it — mostly my #TNI friends on Twitter! — I know that it’s the right choice for me.

I’m leaving on a six-month jaunt through Southeast Asia this November and I’m currently sacking away EVERY spare penny toward it. I plan to blog on http://www.adventurouskate.com throughout the trip, and I would love to be able to be able to sell my writing while on the road in Laos, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and more. The one roadblock? I don’t know if I will be able to afford the course while saving for the trip in the first place!

My biggest goal is to become a location-independent travel writer. I know that the Matador U Travel Writing Course will help me get there.

My Twitter screenname is @adventurouskate. Thank you!

  • Lorraine

I’ve been interested in Matador’s Travel Writing program for awhile now. I’m looking to break into travel writing and improve my skills. Making enough money to support my traveling would be awesome!

    • http://itraveldame.com Lorraine

Oops, find me on Twitter @lorraineya. :)

  • chris swan

WOW it sounds like so much fun to do either of the two courses. I love to read about others travels, but I don’t travel much with my two little kids. But love to live vicariously thru those of you so adventurous. Oh to be in my youth again and traveling.

I’d like to enroll in MatadorU as I am getting serious about my travel writing, on my blog, with article submissions and I’m in the middle of writing a travel memoir about my 1200 km walking pilgrimage in Japan.

Great idea for the contest by the way. Cheers

  • http://moheyra.posterous.com/ Melanie

    @Moheyra
Traveling and writing, a nice combination that I would love to take part in, professionaly speaking. You discover and share, and this is essential for everyone. Keep “childish” eyes to always be amazed by all the wonderful things the world has to offer, and enable people to become aware of how lucky we are.
For those reasons, I think MatadorU is the perfect fit for me, to teach me and to train me, and to give me the opportunity to do what I like.
    Thank you :)

@20sTravel here. I’ve wanted to sign up for the writing program for quite some time but it just doesn’t fit in my budget!

  • Jenna Malinen

    @jrmalinen

I would love to win this contest so that I could create a presence online and know what it’ll take to do so via social networking, photographs, and writing. To learn such skills about photography through Matador would be a dream come true because you guys are so successful at what you do, and you obviously know the ropes.

  • Ryley

I’ve wanted to join Matador’s Travel Writing program since I last heard about it a couple of months ago, however I haven’t been able to come up with the extra budget to participate. Travel is my passion and my dream in life is to experience the world and share my stories on a profitable travel blog. Thanks everyone!

  • http://www.theroadforks.com Akila

@theroadforks is our twitter name. I’ve wanted to sign up for the writing program because, in addition to providing great tools, it seems like it is a great way to meet other travel writers — unfortunately, it hasn’t fit into our budget (especially since we are getting ready to go to uber-expensive Japan.)

  • http://www.futureexpat.wordpress.com Leah Budke

    @leahcb

I’m a college student preparing to study abroad in Spain and would love to be able to do some travel writing while abroad. I’ve been developing a blog for about a year to document my experience but would find it even more rewarding to be able to share my experiences with the Matador Community. The MatadorU program would be the ideal resource to learn the ins and outs of travel writing.

  • tullosgirl

My twitter name is @debbietullos. I have been fascinated with Matador since the first article I read. I have often scanned through the MatadorU page, savoring the description of the course. Last year, I finally realized a lifelong goal of having my writing published, but that only inspired me to seek out more opportunities, all the while fighting the “you’re not good enough” demon in my own head. I have done little traveling, but deeply long to. I would love to win the free tuition in hopes that it would help me take the leap into more serious writing as a professional, and boost my confidence to do so. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Michael Adams

http://twitter.com/yellowstonemike I would like to enroll in Matador U classes to enhance the ability of sharing my experiences.

  • Eddie

    @Eddie_RTW

I would love to win the Matador Photography class, because I’m starting my world trip in a month, and will like to be as good as I can be behind the camera.

  • http://www.travelmaestro.wordpress.com Beverly/@TravelMaestro

I want to continue my life-long passion for travel by writing about it from the road. I’ve worked in the travel industry my entire career, but to be employed to write about travel would be my ultimate success. Winning a place in the Matador U Travel Writing course would help me realize my potential as a writer and put me one step closer to fulfilling my dream. Please pick me, @TravelMaestro, and I’ll send you a post card from my first job!

  • http://belalumo.wordpress.com/ Amy

    @BelaLumo
I’m currently living abroad and starting to get serious about publishing my photography. I’m not as confident in my writing, but I’ve recently started trying to blog more about my experiences. The Matador classes would really help me improve me writing, and also point me in the right direction for getting published.

  • http://www.twitter.com/officialmagpie Billy Mitchell

Besides my love of travel, writing, and photography, I’ve followed Matador for personal reasons as I’m sure many readers do. I’ve grown up as the only child of a U.S. military veteran, while my father’s globetrotting stories never failed to captivate, I always felt more than just a tinge of bitterness that obscured a much greater sadness as he’d recall his time abroad. I really want nothing more now than to help him see the world is as every bit as beautiful as he had once hoped it would be, it was the war that was ugly.

  • Alex

@alex_enroute, I’d like to take the course because it seems like a perfect match for me. I’m currently traveling around the world and would love to have this resource to improve my photography.

  • http://matadortravel.com/travel-community/alainaob Alaina

As a young adult and recent college graduate, I wholeheartedly believe that today’s young people should experience the world in order to promote peace and understanding and how to interact in today’s global culture. Indeed, my own travels have opened my eyes to ways of existing other than what I grew up knowing. It’s a pity that in today’s society recent college graduates are constantly pressured to get from college to fast-paced, high-paying career without a minute to breathe – leaving no time to explore The Great Unknown. Through my travel writing, I hope to inspire other young people (and, of course, those who are young at heart!) to take the time to discover other countries and cultures. Winning this free tuition to MatadorU would enable me to begin following my dream of sharing my stories with others and inspiring others to take that first step beyond their comfort zones.

  • http://www.traveling-savage.com Keith

I go by @travelingsavage on Twitter. My writing could benefit from some expert advice and I’ve heard good things about Matador’s program. As with others, money has been in short supply so sign-up has been on the wish list.

    @ThoughtfulNomad

I’m currently trying to jump start my travel writing and continuously find myself browsing through endless Matador articles to further my knowledge of the business (and because I’ve become absolutely addicted to the entertainment that this site provides). Needless to say, it wasn’t very difficult to figure out that MatadorU would be the perfect program for me. Having access to professional editing advice, receiving lessons on how to pitch, and being a part of this vibrant online community are just a few of the reasons as to why becomming enrolled in MatadorU is a huge goal of mine. Traveling has made me who I am today, and if I can learn to successfully share my experiences with others through professional publications, I would be living my dream. Unfortunately, like most of us out there, I just don’t have the money for the program!

  • http://itchyfoot.tumblr.com Sara C.

For the past few months, I’ve been gradually hoarding the little bits of cash I’ve earned by writing for BootsNAll and now Matador, hoping to eventually save the tuition money for Matador U’s travel writing program.

I’ve been writing about my travels pretty much my whole life, starting with construction paper and crayons on RV trips through the Midwest with my grandparents. In recent months I’ve begun taking my writing and blogging more seriously, selling a few pieces online, thinking about bigger and better things. The more I read the work of other travel writers, the more I realize I have room to grow. Which is where Matador U comes in.

    Help a girl out?

Living the “typical” 9-5 lifestyle doesn’t exactly motivate or allow enough time to develop my travel writing. An October trip to Southeast Asia was an incredibly inspiring experience where I wanted to document and showcase what I thought was a unique adventure. I began writing in a notebook and moved forward by starting an amateur blog, but am ready to propel myself and my writing to the next level. MatadorU travel writing is that next step for me, and I would appreciate an opportunity to challenge myself and join the wave of talented travel writers.

I am a budding travel writer and have taken some classes elsewhere (NYU included) and feel that Matador would offer more relevant courses and instruction. I am often browsing the site looking for articles on the places I go or have been.

Aside from my http://www.dianaellefson.com site I also have a blog I have kept for 3 years on the adventures moving to NYC from Seattle.

If I win, both of my sites and myself will benefit from the travel writing tips I learn!

I recently authored my own eco-travel blog, chronicling my travels around the United States to learn about sustainability and culture. It was very successful, but it didn’t earn enough money and I had to cut my travels short.

I want to head out again, this time around the world, to meet worldchangers and explorers and to tell stories of people who are finding new ways to move through life. I need some training to make that happen. I want my writing to travel as far as I do, and I want to earn a shoestring living (at least).

This is a life passion for me, and a Matador education would help make it real.

I want to win because I can’t afford to pay for it right now!
Seriously though, writing and travel are the only two things in my life that have persevered through every awkward teenage phase, every New Years resolution and every little pity party I’ve thrown myself. Combining them as a career would not only make prodigious amounts of sense, it would also the best thing that could ever happen. Ever. I know I have some writing skill, I just need refinement.

As an 18 year old student captivated by photography and travel, joining MatadorU would begin my young yet optimistic dream.

By reading the topics on Matador Network, my need for travel is fueled daily. Matador is partially to blame for my unquenchable longing for travel and photography experience!

By joining MatadorU, I would finally be starting what I have dreamed for quite some time. Even though I am only in a small town, I manage to work every day only to pay for camera equipment so I can escape 15 minutes away and feel like I’m in a far away place. Although things have only just began, my knowledge for travel writing and travel photography would greatly expand, and that is what is propelling me.

My name is Meaghan and in two weeks, I will be graduating with a degree in Documentary Production from Emerson College. Traveling is not a hobby of mine, it is a duty. I feel strongly about making documentaries because it is a way to uncover important issues throughout the world and to expand the minds of those who watch. I feel that enrollment in MatadorU’s Traveling Writing Program will help me gain invaluable skills as a writer and enhance my skills as a documentarian.

I am a true believer in traveling alone on a small budget, packing light and going for the less traveled areas (or, for certain issues, going into the very heart of the matter). Immersion into foreign cultures and broadening perceptions is very important to me. I currently speak Spanish and French and I will begin Arabic studies shortly. I intend to apply to grad school next year for a degree in International Development and Social Justice.

With MatadorU’s help, I may have the chance to gain skills in travel writing. In return, I may be able to express my experiences abroad pertaining to destinations, culture, or even political and social issues.

I am very appreciative for this opportunity.

    Thank you

I’m a travel blogger who adores all aspects of traveling – the planning, the research and once arriving at the destination – seeing everything with your own eyes, living and breathing a new culture and eating and drinking with the locals. Having just come back home from the Philippines and eager to write about my experiences, I’d like to further develop my writing style and joining Matador U would allow me this fantastic opportunity to do so.

  • http://www.amytheexplorer.com Amy E.

My name is Amy, and I am a travelaholic.

It actually started at a fairly young age. When I was 15 I paid my own way to Germany. I got my first taste of travel, and I haven’t been the same since.

I was travel-free for 5 years, but I my thirst to see the world never was quenched.
In college, it just got worse. I studied abroad and backpacked through Europe, Morocco and Turkey. I thought that would make me better, but instead it just made me realize that I can’t resist traveling any longer. I became a full on addict.

After I graduated I went on a 6-week road trip around the USA. Then I moved to South Korea. In September I am going on a backpacking trip to Southeast Asia.

I’ve seen specialists, but sadly they say there is nothing that they can do. I’ve given up wanting to have a normal life, now I embrace my ‘problem.’ I want to win the MatadorU tuition so that I can spread the word about travel and show other travelaholics that they are not alone. I want them to learn to accept their constant lust for the unknown and new experiences, and to just stop fighting to the urge. There are more of us than you expect. Let me be the voice of the oppressed travelaholic everywhere.

Hey David. It’s great that Matador offers free tuition to the no doubt amazing MatadorU. I’ve spent hours on the U’s homepage, I’m not sucking up, I’ve wanted to enroll since the earliest stages of the program. See, I’ve always appreciated travel in a way that just needs to be articulated. I’m working my way to becoming a professional writer too. Now, I want to combine the two.

Matador continues to have an influence on my travels and writing. The Community is an bountiful resource for planning a trip and meeting like-minded travelers. The writing is often profound and, to me, more relevant than the news and other journalism. What’s more, I’ll come across a post and think I know the author. Like we are of one opinion. Matador is current, creative and pretty comprehensive when it comes to a traveler’s lifestyle.

Since I graduated from the College of Charleston in South Carolina, I’ve survived off freelancing for our local weekly. I’m a music writer, food critic, beat writer and blogger. I’m also an editorial intern for Charleston Magazine, hoping one day to contribute to magazines like Outside, and Nat Geo Traveler. But I’ve realized I’m behind in understanding of how effective the internet can be for increased visibility; a skill I know MatadorU would help out with.

What’s next? I’ll be in Spain for Primavera Sound Festival at the end of this month and can’t wait to blog some indie music history in the making. It’ll be my first foreign festival. I will, hopefully, be accepted as a volunteer with Americorps come September, spending a year with the environmental newspaper, Appalachian Voices.

MatadorU keeps getting better and better. When I have the money, I will promptly enroll, but for now I sincerely appreciate everybody at Matador. Keep up the great work.

    Brian

  • @metimisanthropy

I’d like to win this award because I’m the baby of over six children and this summer will be my very first time going anywhere without any supervision (or anyone accompanying in any way, shape or form).

I’m Black and I’m going to Ireland with an oh so pleasant foundation of negativity about the idea from my parents. I’ve heard the statement “There are no Black people there – you know better. This disobedience is why people end up on proverbial milk cartons” from the first day I told my parents I’d won the scholarship needed to fund the entire trip.

But I’m going anyway. Because I know it’s something I really should do. I can feel it literally inside the fibers of my being. This is poignant for me because for the past year and a half, I’ve felt practically nothing. My baby brother passed away in September of 2008 and he was the closest sibling I had. I spent the most time with him growing up and despite the almost 10 year age difference, I felt like I had so much in common with him. Of all in my family, I could talk to him. He supported me – something greatly needed, as can be seen before.

When he passed away, I lost much of my grounding, let alone motivation. I stopped caring about school entirely, took a dip in my GPA with little emotion, and had my share of unspeakable thoughts of despair. That, added to my already present misanthropy equated to my becoming a zombie. But over time, I got better in general – I became okay with his passing, I realized I had to be there to help my family through it as well, and I smoothed over my apathy towards school, trying to find something to make going daily worth it.

In September 2009, I was told about a week-long trip to Ireland being planned by professors at school, along with information about a scholarship that’d help with funds for it. I submitted an application with a simple “What the heck. I’ve got nothing to lose. There’s always a fast food joint down the street to work at for the summer and an xbox360 can numb even the most hyper into summer-long immobility if the game disc inside is good enough.”

At the time, I’d enrolled into a museum specialization course because of an interest in historical conservation, only afterward realizing the fact that the specialization’s graduation requirement is a trip abroad accompanied with museum employee interviews, etc. So I applied for the scholarship using that class as a basis and saying I’d also be doing an internship while abroad. In the end, what started as a week-long trip ended up being a 3 month trip with full basic funding (accommodations, airfare, food).

Since being awarded that (which I, to be honest, wasn’t expecting), something’s started inside of me. This…. burning, ethereal need to end my misanthropy and become something past that. To pass the limits of this sense of humanity and become an informant – to either put to good use my ever-present love of photography or strengthen my writing (and make it more concise >,,<.

Thanks so much for the opportunity. "Appreciative" is an understatement for how I feel about it.

I would like to experience the MatadorU Travel Writing program because I believe
that only as we share our experiences will we be better able to help the people of the world understand each other. It’s hard to call someone “different” or to look at them as “enemy” or “strange” when you get to know them. Through travel and writing this is possible–not only seeing and experiencing, but spreading the word.
To be able to show what it’s like in a yurt or how the food tastes or what the music means to a different culture is important to me. To show how we are all connected will help bring healing among us.

I love writing and travel and would love to be able to hone the craft of travel writing while traveling “light” (back pack) with my son to Bangladesh and India next fall.

The MatadorU Travel Writing course would help me in my dream of connecting.

I want to join MatadorU because as much as I think I know how to tell a travel story, I’m sure there are plenty of things I’m missing. And what better way to learn how to tell a story better than to learn from the pros.

I’ve held a 9-to-5 job my whole adult life. I’ve wondered what it would be like to pursue another career, doing something completely different than what I’m doing now. MatadorU would be the next step.

Also, the networking leads are just invaluable. :)

I love to write and I love to travel. Learning how to put the two together would be a dream come true. I also would love to learn to use photography to accent my writing. I’m creative by nature and get bored quickly with many 9 to 5 type jobs. I think Matador U is a possible step to my dream.

I’ve been living outside the US for the last six years. In that time I’ve been to many places and done some incredible things. Never having been one for passive travel, I always try to find a mission. I have written blogs to keep the experiences fresh in my mind but haven’t shared them with an outside audience. I just started a website and need direction for the posts on it. I also have a photo gallery that could use some criticism. My goal in life is to never work again and I’ve never considered travel, writing or photography work.

I currently teach in South Korea.
I’ve been to Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, China -and Tibet-, Nepal, India, Mexico, England, Spain and Italy.
I stayed at an ashram for a month studying yoga in Nasik, India.
I trained as a Muay Thai fighter for a month on Koh Phangan, Thailand.
I studied Tai Chi in Chang Mai.
I mountain biked from Lhasa to Kathmandu on the Southern Friendship Highway.
-A thousand kilometers at four thousand meters-

I want to improve my ability to relate my experiences through images and the written word. I hope you can help. Muchluv, @FrancisMike

My name is Linda Beth Jones and I am new to travel writing and blogging. I always thought I wasn’t good enough to stand out in a sea of millions fighting to be location independent by writing about their passion. I finally found the courage to try, but don’t yet have the tools necessary to go very far.

I want to live passionately and spread that passion to my kids. I want for us to see the world, not just the bubble we currently live in. I want us to experience other cultures and lives, other environments, other ways of living. I want to inspire in the my kids the desire to connect and to make a difference. I would like to make this possible by becoming location independent through travel writing and blogging. I am hoping Matador U is the place to start.

Thank you so much for bringing this opportunity to my attention.

With little tastes of travel over the years, my hunger has grown deep, ravenous, and all-consuming. I want to see so many things that I’ve given up keeping lists, because I simply can’t put down all the things I think of daily on a piece of paper – it would detract from the time I need to get other things accomplished. Writing is a deep-seated passion of mine, and one that I would love to use in conjunction with my wanderlust in order to open the world to others, like it opens to me when I read about different countries, events, and peoples. I want to inspire and I want to learn to inspire.

I’ve already enrolled in the Photography program, but I’d love to try my hand at the Travel Writing course, as well.

My interest in travel writing and photography stems from a deep-seeded belief that media was not meant to be highlight the world’s crisises and evils. Life should be about exploring new landscapes, learning new cultures, and pushing personal boundaries. Media should be about sharing these experiences with an audience.

There are so many reasons why enrollment at MatadorU would be a life-changing experience. I am one of those typical “stuck-in-the-office” people, working a 9-to-5 job and always looking at travel websites just waiting and wishing. I have planned on saving to enroll at MatadorU, however finances aren’t that great and things always seem to pop up. The last thing I want to do is spend the rest of my life sitting in this same dull office chair and checking the clock to hit 5:00. I need adventure in my life – I need to be pushed to explore my creativity. I believe that MatadorU will do just that. Thank you!

In all honesty I have never won anything in my life… so to win this opportunity would be a first for me. Besides the pathetic fact that I have never technically “won” anything, having the chance to improve my writing with the assistance of Matador U’s amazing and talented team would allow me to take the necessary steps towards my passion.

The truth is – I am a recent college graduate who had to work full time while in school to afford tuition and to help my family. The traveling I have done took me endless nights of eating ramen noodles and shopping at the Salvation Army.

I have always taken an interest in travel writing, but I wanted to do some traveling before I made a decision to pursue this passion… Therefore I began to jet set with the pennies I had saved.

I have just returned from Haiti where I volunteered with an emergency medical team and at an orphanage. I had to return home because a good friend of mine by the name of “Sallie Mae” wanted to speak with me… Needless to say I found my passion of traveling when I was completely immersed in such a rich culture and a beautiful country – Haiti – I had blogged about my experiences in Haiti and noticed the power of words. I had the ability to share with family, friends, and associates the work that I was doing and the reality of the situation.

I want to be able to share not only my stories, but others stories as well… but with more power. That is why I would be blessed to win this opportunity to become a part of Matador U; it would help me move toward my dream of sharing my words with the world and also be my first “win”!

I want to win the free tuition for the new MatadorU photography class. I am (almost) through the writing course, and I spent every spare dime on that. Then about halfway through I quit my job to become a chicken farmer, which means I have a lot of chickens, but basically have negative dimes to spend on the MatadorU photography class. I’m stoked on Matador and want to absorb all the courses they have to offer, but I’ve gotta buy food for my squawking chicken babies.

I’m travelling a lot this summer and as of December (the end of my year-long chicken farming commitment), have no plans other than to try to find a way to make a living between writing, photography, and the good life. My main goal: avoid the fluorescent glow of an office cube and the five pounds I gain when I so much as look at an office desk.

I am a writer who enjoys travelling, plain and simple. It is only natural for me to want to further my passion and learn from one the best travel communities.

I’m the girl who doesn’t want to take off her backpack even after I’m home, an adventurist who loves to discover the road less travelled and the budget backpacker who makes the most out of every dime.

I’m the one who is avoiding the office job with a yearly salary and benefits, the long-term relationship that leads to marriage and kids, and the car that breaks down every other month. Once I give in, I’m doomed, there goes my freedom to travel and I mean really travel. Not to hop across ten different European countries in two weeks, not to head to New York for a shopping spree or sleep in until noon with a hangover in Prague.

I want to see the sun rise and set wherever I go, spend time getting to know the locals, taste real food in hidden gems, discover true art and be blown away by history. I want to climb every mountain and swim in every ocean. I want to miss trains, experience delayed flights and get lost in the middle of nowhere.

For me, travel is about living life to the fullest. It’s about exploring the beauty of this world before it’s too late and taking pleasure in telling the untold stories. With a pen and notebook clenched in my hand, I will travel down that off beaten track, follow every twist and turn, wade through rivers and soar through the sky.

That’s what I call living the dream.

    All the best,

    Ashley

I travel to discover new stories of people and places, but I always end up finding my own untold story.

With a group of Rwandan genocide widows, I discover that we share a love of dance. While trying to squeeze into t-shirts in Hong Kong, I realize that I am self conscious about my body. While eating a fish eyeball in Thailand, I find out I am gutsy even despite a sensitive stomach.

When I write about my journeys, I always uncover something new about myself.

Enrolling at MatadorU would not just help me become a stronger writer, smarter traveler, and more creative storyteller. It would also help me to find better ways to travel the world around and within me.

My eyes thirst for beautiful images.
My soul yearns to be one with the world.
I know what it’s like to be moved by photography. But with a little extra guidance with the given opportunity, I hope to receive the motivation that allows me to share this power with others.
I want this for the same reasons as everyone else.
But maybe, just maybe . . . I want it a little bit more.

For the last 20-plus years, I have been traveling around the world. It is my passion and as I grew up professionally, I also developed a passion for writing. I’ve always felt you should write about what you know and I believe I know travel whether it’s solo traveling, family traveling, a long weekend trip to Montana or two weeks in New Zealand; I’d like to share my experiences and opinion on the Web.

As a student of MatadorU travel writing, I will be able to learn effective and lively travel writing, receive constructive feedback to help me grow as a travel writer and take part in an open, supportive forum that will give me the discipline to sit down and write about travel as much as possible.

As a restless wanderer I have been feverishly taking the path less traveled by as Frost suggested so long ago. I have learned that the simple life combined with a passion for new cultures and experiences creates a life filled with riches that could never be replaced by material possessions.

I have been fortunate enough to realize my desires to share my experiences with readers from around the world while encouraging them to embark upon their own journey, carved by their own yearnings. Refining my skills as a writer sits at the top of my resolutions for this year. A course with MatadorU would without a doubt help me achieve one of my greatest aspirations for 2010.

Growing up, teachers and family always told me that I was a gifted writer, and I believed them. I took it as a given that I would always be able to write well, and thus was unconcerned when I graduated from college, started scrambling to pay my bills in this the “real” world, and forgot about writing for a while.

I feel the skill, like any left by the wayside, start to slide away from me, and lacking some sort of formal direction I am having a really difficult time finding my footing again. Writing was always a way I had enjoyed expressing myself, and now that I have finally begun to reclaim those visually creative joys that I was told were too childish to pursue, I also want to be a better writer than I have become.

Like everyone here, I am in love with travel, and want to experience new places and express what I find in writing and art. I would also like to better share the inspiration I find in the territories closer to home that are usually considered mundane.

I appreciate the opportunity to enter this contest, and also the fact that even having this small prompt has caused me to write *something*, which is a step in the right direction.

Matadorians, thank you, for being here and doing what you do!

I would love the opportunity to attend MatadorU as it will give me a way to keep my dream alive, as well as give me the tools necessary to learn photography skills. Im learning travel writing is more than just the words and I would love to learn the other half – pictures (after all they are worth 1000 words)

I will use the skills I learn at MatadorU to spread my voice, so that others who are unable to travel can still see the world!

It would be pretty incredible to have the opportunity to take a MatadorU Travel Writing course. Over the past 6-8 months, as I was laid off in this economy and searching for a new position, I really took time to think about who I am, what makes me happy, what I want from life, and how to get it. My travel experiences – the good and the bad – play a large part in shaping who I am. From my first flight at 11 across the country, followed by my second ever flight to Australia at the young age of 12…I’ve had a thirst for the world and getting to know what is out there.

I’ve come home from my backpacking trip to South America, from the stint of time studying in Mexico and the other half of a year working in Spain, to family and friends telling me how they loved reading my emails. How descriptive I was, how honest in my feelings (again, the good and the bad) and that it made them want to see those places. That brings me so much happiness – I love sharing my experiences. And I love helping others gain their own experiences which is why I’ve spent a good deal of time working in international travel/fellowship programs.

As I grow up though, I’ve realized I want this to be more than emails home, and more than helping to send people to study for a few weeks. I get antsy when I don’t have a trip planned …. I want to learn how to turn this into something bigger and greater. The world is so connected now through technology and I’m ready to dive in!

Thank you for offering such a cool opportunity! suzanne

I’ve dreamed of being a travel writer for years, when I wasn’t dreaming of traveling more and seeing all the places in the world I haven’t been yet.

Five months ago I ditched my career in Hollywood, my home in L.A. and most of my possessions so that I could move to Belgium and live out another dream–actually two dreams: to become a dive instructor and to live in Europe.

I’ve started blogging about my new home while traveling around the country and its European neighbors. I’d love to jump-start a new career as an expat travel writer and share my discoveries and experiences with a wider audience.
