The invention of teenagers around the world

REALLY SWEET SOUNDING PROJECT: Filmmaker Matt Wolf is directing a movie based on punk author Jon Savage’s Teenage, which “reveals the pre-history of modern teenagers” by looking across various cultures and histories, “from the early 20th century — from party-crazed Flappers and hipster Swing Kids to brainwashed Nazi Youth and frenzied Sub-Debs.”

Photographs of early ’90s life in Oaxaca by David Alan Harvey.

In the lead-up to the film, Wolf has been posting really interesting photo archives of teens in different times and contexts, from teenage prostitutes in Thailand to Jewish teens in Germany in the early ’60s, to youth soldiers of El Salvador’s FMLN, to Oaxaca teens of the ’90s, to US college students in the late 1800s.

Each archive serves as a kind of portal into different historical and societal contexts, different places and times you might not otherwise know about.

Looking forward to seeing this production come together in 2013.

Wow what a beautiful concept! I can’t wait to see the finished product. Just that one picture alone of the 90′s teenagers in Oaxaca speaks volumes.
