Here’s a new bucket list: places we want to blog from before we die.

CARNIVAL ~ just the word summons visions of otherworldly floats and sparkling, feather-clad Brazilian beauties. Considered one of the greatest festivals and spectacles on Earth, Carnival holds my fascination firmly by the neck.

What traveler hasn’t imagined themselves surrounded by the famed samba schools who compete with pomp and splendor for top honors?

As a blogger, video junkie and shutter bug, Carnival represents the ultimate kid-in-a-candy-store travel fantasy.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Have you experienced Carnival? Do you have a blog (or pix or video) to show for it? Where else do you want to visit and write about before you kick the bucket?

I agree about Carnaval, but disagree about Rio. Most foreigners associate Rio with Carnaval by default and don’t realize that it’s a festival that happens all over Brazil. I talk about that here: http://zerotres.wordpress.com/2010/01/19/brazilian-carnival-beyond-rio-de-janeiro/

My pictures from 2008 are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/zerotres/sets/72157604384356293/

In 2007 and 2009 I was too caught up in the party to stop and take pictures, but here is a narrative from 2009: http://zerotres.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/carnival-in-the-middle-of-nowhere/

Damn Ernesto! I defer to the party master! Thanks for hooking up the links!

As a Brazilian, I agree with Ernesto. There is Carnaval all over the country and you should check out the parades in Salvador, São Paulo, Porto Alegre amongst many others. You will be surprised.

However, thank you for your post. It certainly is good for our self-esteem. Wherever you should choose to spend your carnival, I hope you have a good time.

I agree with Ernesto. The Carnaval in Recife/Olinda I went to two years ago was spectacular!! (Ooh, and I videoblogged about it, yay!) I’ve heard the same about Salvador. These both have much more of a sense of authenticity and participation than many stories I’ve heard about the Rio carnival.
I was living in Rio for the last 3 months of 2009, and specifically left it before Carnaval season to escape the ridiculous prices in accommodation and the huge chaos of tourists.
I thoroughly enjoyed blogging about Rio for those 3 months, with no Carnaval going on. Rio without the Carnaval is well worth the visit :) I love Cariocas. Go to Rio in September and blog about it, you’d have a great time!!
Oh, and learn some Portuguese. Brazilians speak excellent English, but you meet some amazing characters if you can converse outside of the university graduate group

That sounds amazing Benny, Rio meet up in Sept? I’m down!

I’d love to see Rio Carnaval, but if I’m in Brazil, it’s got to be Salvador. It’s just spectacular.

Haven’t experienced Carnival in Rio or anywhere else for that matter.

Where to blog from before your die? Here’s a few places: High atop the Eiffel Tower; Yap; Aran Islands; Sukhbaatar Square (Mongolia); Gorkhi-Terlj National Park (Mongolia); Sydney Harbor and so many other places :)
