After taking up his post, the Vatican advised Brewster to keep his sexuality a secret. When Brewster refused, he received backlash from the country’s prominent Cardinals. According to the New York Times, Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, the archbishop of Santo Domingo said he was appalled that Brewster received the post, and even called him a “maricón,” a Spanish slur for gay men.
