AN ECONOMIST-YOUGOV SURVEY of 2,000 U.S. citizens aged 18 and older found that just 43 percent of Americans knew that Puerto Ricans are legal citizens of the United States. As Puerto Rico experiences financial crisis, the survey may suggest why few Americans seem to care about Puerto Rico’s situation or consider it the responsibility of the U.S.

The poll found that just 8% of Americans said they were actually paying attention to Puerto Rico’s financial crisis. It also found that only 22% of Republicans and 52% of Democrats supported providing financial help to Puerto Rico.
