Hi, Erik-

Thanks for your kind comment and your thoughtful questions. I don't really know how to predict when the bill will be voted on, but I do think that the continued steps towards a more open, friendly policy are all significant. I think the culture and economy of Cuba will be affected immediately, though not, perhaps, for the reasons you might expect. Cuban culture is already affected by American culture, and I think it's important to remember that though people constantly talking about "Cuba opening up," Cuba's been open to all other countries and tourism is the cornerstone of its economy. Though it's typically portrayed as stuck in the 1950s, Cuba just looks like it's antiquated-- it's not. Regarding your last question, I'd direct you to another article I recently wrote on the subject, which you can find here: http://collazoprojects.com/2009/04/03/freedom-to-travel-to-cuba-act-what-does-it-mean-for-cuba/

Julia, another great article about Cuba - I've read all of them to prepare for my travels to the island. However, I don't know when I'll make it there. When do you think this bill will be passed, considering what Obama and Clinton said at the Summit of the Americas, and how much do you think it will affect the culture and economy within the first year? Will hoards of drunk popped-coller college students taint Cuba as I [think] I know it? Or would you predict a more gradual increase in American commercial tourism?

Nice article Julie, thanks for the information. It would be great to see the total embargo done away with, if not for our sake, for the sake of the Cuban people. Plus that, I don't see why our government should be able to tell us where we can and can't travel. It'll be interesting to watch what happens.
